That decision will apparently clear the way for a reconstruction of the two-lane highway east of Havre. Work is expected to begin this summer. Montana Department of Transportation officials had said they feared if the environmental studies were reviewed, construction would be delayed. "We are acting on behalf of the people as they don't want anymore... Full story

  • Recovering from disaster

EVA VERGARIA MICHAEL WARREN Associated Press Writer DICHATO, Chile

Chile's president says it will take three years to rebuild the region wracked by an earthquake and tsunami, something all too clear to the people cleaning up this splintered tourist town. Dichato is nestled between pine-forested hills and a lovely sheltered bay where colorful fishing boats served coastal communities and export companies. Its population of 4,000 triples each January and February with tourists — many were in town when disaster struck — and residents count on that brief summer vacation for much of their inc... Full story

  • Murder suspect charmed some people

ELLIOT SPAGAT Associated Press Writer SAN DIEGO

He shoveled snow and carried groceries for a neighbor. He cared for a sick girlfriend by pressing a cool cloth to her head all afternoon. A former high school girlfriend called him "the one person who has made me feel completely safe in this world." Testimonies from family and friends in a 2000 child molestation case cast a sympathetic light on 30-year-old John Albert Gardner III, now accused of murdering 17-year-old Chelsea King while he was on a run and raping or attempting to rape her. • Marijuana helps to relieve pain

    Tristan

Well let's see, smoking medical marijuana will cause you to sleep on doorsteps and become a beggar for buds? I myself have seen that instance, but it was alcohol or money for alcohol they were begging for. The right to live pain-free without the worry of persecution for using a God-given plant has finally come to the people who need this the most. Pain-killing pills will eat the lining of your stomach and cause ulcers and other problems, so let's outlaw any use of these and make the patient just suffer? It's time for the...

KATHARINE HOURELD, Associated Press Writer NAIROBI, Kenya

Danish military forces disrupted the takeover by pirates of a cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden today, marking the first time this has happened since a multinational armada deployed a year ago, a naval spokesman said. Ten members of the Danish special forces clambered aboard the Antigua and Barbudaflagged Ariella from a dinghy but by that time the pirates may have already been scared off when a helicopter from a Danish warship Absalon buzzed the cargo ship. The ship's 25 crew members — a Bulgarian, a Slovak, an Indian, 15 F...

  • Jan. jobless rate dips to 9.7 percent

CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON

The outlook for jobs became a bit less bleak with January's unexpected decline in the unemployment rate, which fell to 9.7 percent from 10 percent as more Americans said they had jobs. Still, Today's unemployment report showed just how deep the job crisis remains. The government now estimates 8.4 million jobs vanished in the Great Recession, and economists think the nation would be lucky to get back 1.5 million of them this year. And they say it will take at least three to four years for the job market to return to anything...

The shark bit through the girl's wet suit, its teeth penetrating her skin. And then she clubbed the tar out of the shark with her body board, driving it away before she was even hurt badly enough to need...

  • Write to Bullock to get Barry Beach freed

    Tristan

Until hearing of Barry Beach, I never gave much thought to the operations of our criminal justice system. Now I know I was ignoring an important issue in our society. I know plenty of people who don't give a single thought to criminal justice and wrongful convictions. They think this issue doesn't affect them. They're wrong. Even if you are never accused of a crime you didn't commit, your safety is compromised when an innocent person is convicted and the guilty party goes free. Personal stories like Barry's bring home the... Full story

  • Havre native helps in Haiti relief

John Kelleher Havre Daily News [email protected]

Air Force Capt. Bert King looked down at Port-au-Prince Airport during one of his many flights into the beleaguered city. The 1996 Havre High School graduate saw what appeared to be a fence that stretched for miles into Haiti's largest airport. As he moved closer, he could see it wasn't a fence. It was people — Haitians patiently lined up single file, hoping against hope that somehow, if they got to the airport, they would find a way out of the country. It is a memory he will always carry with him. King has had many flight m... Full story
