  • Saturday night update: Rocky Boy copes with serious floods

John Kelleher Havre Daily News [email protected]

John Kelleher Havre Daily News [email protected] Rocky Boy officials Saturday night were dealing with serious flooding on the reservation. Bridges were washed out and some evacuations were reported. Water was reported overflowing on the Rocky Boy Dam. "We urge all tribal residents to remain calm as the tribe is mobilized to accommodate this emergency activity — and work with local tribal departments during this high-water incident." In a press release issued on Saturday night, the Chippewa Cree Tribe said that a...

  • Firing squad execution sobering, but dramatic

JENNIFER DOBNER Associated Press Writer DRAPER, Utah

The explosive reports sent a volley of .30-caliber bullets from the five marksmen into the chest of Ronnie Lee Gardner. I was expecting to flinch but didn't as I watched his execution from the witness room. It was so quick that for a split-second I wondered if it had actually happened. There was no blood splattered across the white cinderblock wall at the Utah State Prison. No audible sounds from the condemned. I couldn't see his eyes. I never saw the guns and didn't hear the countdown to the trigger-pull. A twice-convicted k...

  • Havre's little leagues transition to Cal Ripken

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News [email protected]

Little league baseball is growing again in Havre, and with another season already nearing its end, some changes have been made to better the program. Before this year little league baseball in Havre was an independent organization. And now its affiliated with Cal Ripken Youth Baseball. Doug Denny and the rest of the little league board members are pleased with the new title, as well as the changes it brings to the area's growing sport. As far as Denny has seen, the transition to Cal Ripken has brought nothing but positives.... Full story

  • Tester offers changes to Forest Bill

MATT GOURAS Associated Press Writer HELENA

    U. S. Sen. Jon Tester released some changes Thursday to his logging and wilderness bill, beating back a Washington, D.C.- based rewrite of the carefully crafted Montana compromise. Tester said the bill would die without the logging mandates a Senate committee removed from his plan. He has put them back in the bill, another step in what he characterized as a long road to declare the first new wilderness areas in decades. "The process to get a bill through, even if it is a simple bill, always takes time and there is always... Full story

  • Skylights thrash rival Argos at home

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

After an 0-2 start to the Frontier Conference season, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team needed a win. Not only did the Skylights need a victory to erase last weekend's difficult road trip, but they needed to stay within striking distance in the early conference race. Northern accomplished those missions and then some on Saturday night by crushing the University of Great Falls Argos 63-36 at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. "I was very pleased with how we played for 30 minutes tonight," MSU-N head...

  • Pride goeth like a little girl screaming, but the lesson sticks

Pam Burke Humor Columnist View from the North 40

Maybe you've caught yourself saying something that starts with these words: "Oh, young people these days ... ." And then you go on with something like: they don't know how to work, they're too soft, they're too chubby, they're too arrogant, they don't know nothing, they're always blah blah blah, until you sound like a cantankerous old fart. Frankly, many statistics and much media coverage give weight to a lot of these complaints. And who among the over-30 crowd can't say that they thought they were much smarter than they...

  • Business licenses, ordinance to be drafted

Alice Campbell Havre Daily News [email protected]

While looking into how to revamp zoning in the city while incorporating medical marijuana and the roughly 100 properties annexed at the end of last year into the code, the Planning and Development Committee realized that Havre has little concrete idea of how many and what type of businesses are within its limits. Also, where those businesses are located is relatively unknown as well. A way to identify businesses and the zones in which they are located would enable the committee to better determine if zoning codes need to be...

  • Change in housing aid program may affect area

Alice Campbell Havre Daily News [email protected]

One of three Havre housing assistance programs' funds could soon be returned to the state if a letter asking to retain control of the program funds is not accepted by the state Department of Commerce. City Council members voted unanimously to send a letter to the state asking that the city be allowed to maintain its own Home Investment Partnership Program funds and have Bear Paw Development Corporation administer them, after hearing from Annmarie Robinson that the state is instituting changes in its U.S. Department of... Full story

  • State will buy land with PPL money

MATT GOURAS Associated Press Writer HELENA

The Montana Land Board endorsed a plan Monday to use roughly $40 million from a settlement with PPL Montana to buy more state land, over the objections of some lawmakers who say only the Legislature can make such a move. The money comes from a state Supreme Court order that says PPL Montana needs to pay rent for the land its hydroelectric dams sit on. Part of that order included damages owed the state in excess of $40 million. The Department of Natural Resources and Conservation said the money would likely best be used by...

  • NASA wants mission to bring Martian rocks to Earth

ALICIA CHANG AP Science Writer MONROVIA, Calif.

If NASA's exploration of Mars were summed up in a bumper sticker, it would read: "Follow the water." Well, they've found the water — ice was discovered by the Phoenix lander in 2008. Now what? It's time to search again for signs of life, scientists say, something they haven't done since 1976. This time, they want to bring Martian rock and soil samples back to Earth. Here, they could be analyzed for fossilized traces of alien bacteria, or chemical or biological clues that could only be explained by something that was alive. Su... Full story

  • The 61st Montana Seed Show — building community

Home Again Sondra Ashton Humor Columnist

Along with hundreds of other folks from the Hi-Line, from cities and towns throughout Eastern Montana and with a few tourists from our sister state, Western Montana, I celebrated a shared heritage at the 61st Annual Montana Seed Show in Harlem last weekend. I like that it is called the "Montana" Seed Show, not the "Harlem" Seed Show. It demonstrates an inclusiveness that reaches beyond regionalism. And in a historically appropriate way, it took place at the high school, the traditional hub of every small-town community. The... Full story

  • No need for panic at the pump

    The Associated Press NEW YORK

Gasoline prices almost always rise in the spring, putting an extra strain on family budgets. This year won't be an exception. But motorists shouldn't panic just yet. That's because government forecasters say drivers aren't likely to pay much more than $3 a gallon, on average, during the peak summer driving season. Expectations are that gasoline prices will average $2.84 a gallon this year, up from $2.34 in 2009. It's a modest increase compared with the past few years when oil prices rose and fell sharply. But it reflects the... Full story
