  • Council seeks funds to upgrade sewer plant

    Zach White

The long-discussed Havre wastewater system improvement project took another step forward Monday night, as the Havre City Council approved applications for a few different funding sources to cover the nearly $9 million project. The whole $8,966,411 will be split, the city hopes, between federal, state and local funds, some granted and some loaned, but almost all dependent on approval by the respective bodies. The proposal approved last night relies mostly on $7,841,411 from the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Rural...

  • County rezones for industrial park

    Tim Leeds

Hill County is one step closer to having land shovel-ready for businesses to move in. The county had added 160 acres — including 40 county-owned acres intended to be an industrial park southwest of Havre — to the city-county planning district. The county intends to create a tax increment finance district. Commissioners Mike Wendland and Kathy Bessette approved the change, made at the request of landowners Vicke Schend and David Vandergriend. The change includes allowing adding the property to Rural Fire District One, the rura...

  • Our View: Reassure students, don't scare them

    Tristan

Havre school administrators — and we suspect administrators in other Hi-Line districts — are doing what they should be doing. They are talking to students, trying to calm their fears that violence will strike their school like they saw occurred in Newtown, Conn., Friday. School Superintendent Andy Carlson said he was also looking at improving security at area schools to prevent a tragedy such as happened in Newtown. Administrators are prepared with answers to any questions kids might have. The attacks in Newtown will have a l...

  • Obama: Historic Myanmar visit underscores progress

    JULIE PACE, Associated Press

BANGKOK — On the eve of his landmark trip to Myanmar, President Barack Obama tried to assure critics that his visit was not a premature reward for a long-isolated nation still easing its way toward democracy. "This is not an endorsement of the government," Obama said Sunday in Thailand as he opened a three-country dash through Asia. "This is an acknowledgement that there is a process under way inside that country that even a year and a half, two years ago, nobody foresaw." AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster U.S. President Barack O...

  • Little Shell to turn corner in its history

    Matthew Brown

BILLIINGS (AP) — Montana's Little Shell tribe appeared poised to fade from history in recent years after it was denied federal government recognition, lost its financial support from the state and saw its elected leadership splinter. But the past year has brought a sharp turnaround for the 4,500-member landless tribe that long has existed on society's fringe. • High School Football Roundup: Malta comes up short in Class B title game

    Havre Daily News Staff

Butte 38, Bozeman 36 (AA) In an incredible finish, the Butte High Bulldogs captured their first state champion since 1990 by beating the Bozeman Hawks 38-36 Friday night in Butte. The Hawks, coached by former Havre High head coach Troy Purcell, had rallied from two touchdowns down in just two minutes, by scoring a TD, recovering an onside kick and scoring again. The Hawks led 36=35 with just 21 seconds left, and it looked as though Purcell would get his second Class AA state title in three years. But the Bulldogs got a great...

  • Skylights topple Concordia at UGF tourney

    George Ferguson

Though the season began all the way back in early October, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team had yet to play a fellow NAIA opponent. Over the course of the weekend though, the Skylights played two good ones from the Golden State Athletic Conference. On Friday night in Great Falls, Northern took down Concordia of California 63-48, then lost to San Diego Christian, 63-54 on Saturday afternoon. The split at the UGF Tournament gives MSU-N a 3-2 overall...

  • George Ferguson Column: Cat-Griz as it should be played

    George Ferguson

MISSOULA — On Saturday afternoon, which eventually turned into evening, the Montana State Bobcats proved they certainly were capable of mixing it up in a Brawl. Then again, just when you'd think there would be little reason left to fight, the Monta na Grizzlies showed they had four more quarters in them too. And that's the story of the 2012 Brawl of the Wild inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium, won by MSU 16-7, in a game which harkened back to the old days on the gridiron. S...

  • Big Sandy seniors fought to the last play

    Daniel Horton

HOT SPRINGS — Even with a crushing loss, it is every prep athletes dream to get the opportunity to play for a state championship. Win or lose, there is something about getting the opportunity, and that is exactly why the five Big Sandy seniors finished their prep careers on the field, and not on the sidelines. The Hot Springs Savage Heat jumped all over the Pioneers in the first quarter, on the very first play. They took an early 17-0 lead through the first frame, but eventually earned the 77-0 win over the Pioneers on S...

  • Bullock takes Hill to court over $500,000 donation

    Matt Gouras

HELENA — Attorney General Steve Bullock is asking a court to force his opponent in the governor's race to return a $500,000 campaign donation. Bullock argues the Montana Republican Party donation to Rick Hill is illegal. Hill counters it was legal because it came when a federal judge had ruled the state's contribution limits unconstitutional. An appeals court reinstated the limits six days later. The Republican Party also disclosed on Wednesday that it gave $32,000 to attorney general candidate Tim Fox. A day later, the M...

  • "Perversion files" show locals helped cover up

    NIGEL DUARA, Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. — Again and again, decade after decade, an array of authorities — police chiefs, prosecutors, pastors and local Boy Scout leaders among them — quietly shielded scoutmasters and others accused of molesting children, a newly opened trove of confidential papers shows. At the time, those authorities justified their actions as necessary to protect the good name and good works of Scouting, a pillar of 20th century America. But as detailed in 14,500 pages of secret "perversion files" released Thursday by order of th...

  • Young Lights head north for three more games

    George Ferguson

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team found its season-opening trip north of the border to its liking as the Lights went 2-0 in Edmonton, Alberta. However, Northern second trip into Canada may prove to be a bit more daunting. Starting Friday, Northern will be in British Columbia for a trio of games against CIS teams, which is the highest level of college basketball in Canada. "These three are going to be pretty tough," Northern head coach Shawn Huse...

  • Frontier Notebook: Carroll gaining momentum

    George Ferguson

There have been a couple of common themes when reflecting on each week in the Frontier Conference. One is the play and steady rise up the NAIA ranks by the Montana Tech Orediggers. And two is how many yards Southern Oregon put up through the air against its most recent victim. But what has been lost in the wild and crazy season that has been the Frontier up to this point is Carroll College. Maybe it's because the Saints dropped back-to-back games in early September, or maybe...

  • For HHS seniors, it's the last race

    Daniel Horton

For a lot of high school athletes, the chance to compete at the state level could elude them for a complete four years. But that isn't the case for the seniors of the Havre High cross country teams, as they will get the opportunity to end their prep careers running at the highest level. And like a lot of teams, the Pony seniors running in Helena on Saturday have been the leaders and crucial components to the team's success this season. • Lights and legends hit the mat

    George Ferguson

For many college teams, an Alumni competition is nothing more than a fun, and laid back exhibition of sorts. But when it comes to the annual Montana State University-Northern Alumni wrestling dual, laid back is not quite the case. Both the current Lights who compete and the past Northern greats who return to Havre take dual very seriously. It's still fun, but it's also Former MSU-Northern and Havre High wrestler Aaron Jensen (top) competes in the 2011 Northern Alumni Dual...

  • High-Stepping Up

    Daniel Horton

Havre High senior Thurman Holdsclaw has only been playing high school football for two years. But he's now one of the top college prospects in Montana. When describing a 6-2, 205-pound athlete that runs a 4.6 second 40-meter dash, as well as an 11.5 second 100-meter dash, what do most people see? If you instantly thought of a golfer, you actually wouldn't be wrong in the case of Havre High senior football star Thurman Holdsclaw. But if you thought of a tyrant on the football field, on offense and defense, then you hit the...

  • Swift professional help after power outage

    Tristan

Editor: During the high winds we had on Tuesday, a tree limb in our neighbor's yard fell onto the power line going to our house and pulled the junction box off the side of our house. We found out we were without power about 4:15 p.m., and we called NorthWestern Energy right away. Within half an hour, an electrician from NWE responded ,and we found out he had to completely cut the electricity to our house, and we would need to find and hire an electrician to repair the junction box and wiring before he could reconnect our...

  • Thoughts on election money, health care reform

    Tristan

Editor: Undoubtedly for this senior, this is the most expensive, longest and obscene election since Eisenhower's second term. Compare this to the Canadian system. In 2010, the prime minister of Canada called a national election. From that day, the election was held five weeks later. The campaign donation limit to any politician is $1,100 per citizen. With the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, Carl Rove's was able to bring in $11 million from out-of-state for Rehberg's campaign. During the previous two years, Rehberg...

  • On your way to heaven, grab the cash box

    Sondra Ashton

A couple weeks ago I went to Floweree to spend the weekend with Karen. Our friend Luana joined us for lunch. After we ate, we piled into Karen's car and explored the back roads, down to the Missouri and the Carter Ferry. If black clouds had not been roiling over the mountains, we would have crossed the river on the ferry, driven dirt roads to Highwood and circled into Great Falls. Instead, we back-tracked through Carter, dug out a yucca plant we spotted along the roadside for...

  • Johnson pushes to regain secretary of state office

    Tim Leeds

Republican Brad Johnson said Wednesday a top focus in his campaign to take back the Montana secretary of state position is to improve election integrity. He has introduced a five-point plan including requiring photo IDs to do so. "I think it's a major issue. I think that folks are genuinely concerned that we can ensure the integrity of the outcome of the election process, and that's what that five-point package is intended to do, " he said in an interview. Johnson was elected secretary of state in 2004. He lost his bid for...

  • Vibrant Futures foe named to board

    Zach White

During the Havre City Council meeting Monday night, the council covered a variety of terrain quickly. At the very end of the meeting, Mayor Tim Solomon said that the regional planning group Vibrant Futures needed a representative from the city to join and participate. Council member Rick Dow volunteered. Vibrant Futures was started recently using a three-year $1.5 million grant from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to Opportunity Link Inc. to form a group of area city, county and tribal governments from...

Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock, a Democrat, said Tuesday he thinks some clear differences have arisen between him and his Republican opponent, former U. S. Rep. Rick Hill.
