  • Vehicle again strikes child biker on viaduct

    Tim Leeds

A near repeat of a tragic incident in 2009 seems to have had a happier ending, with Havre emergency medical technicians taking a child to Northern Montana Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the child's bicycle was struck by a black sport utility vehicle on the corner of 7th Avenue and 1st Street. Havre Fire Chief Dave Sheppard confirmed this morning that the child was taken to the hospital, but that no life-threatening injuries were apparent. According to the Havre Police Department log, the crash was reported...

  • Our View: Darts and laurels

    Tristan

Laurel — The moderate wings of the Republican Party in the Montana Legislature, especially the Montana House, have gotten just about everyone upset — except the people who elected them. The moderates have supported the Democrats on some issues and have voted with the conservative wing of their own party on other issues. That is what good politicians are supposed to do. For being independent voices, they have been criticized by Democrats and vilified by fellow Republicans, But they have gained a lot of respect from common fol...

  • Chained CPI: Ugly consequences for seniors

    Mary L. Williams

One of the most serious threats facing Montana's seniors and veterans is an acronym you've probably heard recently: Chained CPI. It's a policy you're going to be hearing a lot more of as the budget debate continues to heat up in Washington. Mary Williams In his most recent budget, President Barack Obama proposed changing the formula used for determining annual cost-of-living adjustments, called COLAs, that seniors, veterans and those with disabilities receive in benefits, including Social Security, federal and military...

  • The science of the sexes

    Pam Burke

I have to laugh every time scientists come up with another study about the intellect and emotions of animals. "Pet dogs show signs of empathy when owners are sad," they say. Shocker. And "Animals show signs of deductive reasoning." Y'think? I never would've figured out why my horse was pawing at the empty water trough while staring at my house, without that study. Pam Burke But nothing makes me laugh more than scientific studies which conclude that men don't understand women....

  • The facts are clear: Seat belts save lives

    Kathy Fanning and Vicki Wilkins

Editor: Shortly the white stuff will be gone and we will have our green world back. We will be going on more road trips and life will be good. We would like to remind you of a few facts that should come into play when we are driving down the road. In 2000 car crashes cost Montana $621 million. That is about $688 for each resident of Montana. This would be a good reason to wear your seatbelts. Montana's seat belt usage has remained consistently lower than the national average — 78.9 percent vs. 85 percent. If we were to i...

EILEEN SULLIVAN, KATIE ZEZIMA, MEGHAN BARR

WATERTOWN, Mass. • Blue Pony track teams visit Belgrade Meet

    Daniel Horton

After a cancelation to the last scheduled track meet, the Havre High track teams will get back to competition this weekend if the good weather holds out. Saturday the Central A Blue Ponies will compete in the Gallatin Valley Invitational in Belgrade. The Ponies are coming off of a strong performance at the Havre Lions Invite, and are hoping the success carries over after missing out on a dual meet in Great Falls on Tuesday due to the poor weather. A year ago, the HHS boys finished in fifth place in Belgrade, while the HHS...

  • HHS tennis teams hit the road

    Daniel Horton

The Havre High boys and girls tennis teams are passed the halfway point in their season. Now, the Blue Ponies look to make a push towards the Central A Divisional tournament, which is less than a month away. New to Havre's schedule this season is an all-day dual with the Lewistown Golden Eagles Saturday in Lewistown. For the last four years, Havre has had this weekend open on its schedule, and while Blue Pony head coach George Ferguson has always made the most of it with an intra-squad dual, he says competing against another...

  • Ponies hope to begin Central A play

    Daniel Horton

After an unexpected delay in action, the recent dry weather can mean only one thing for the Havre High softball program, and that's… play ball. The last three games the Central A Blue Ponies have attempted to play were canceled due to the cold and snowy weather. The Ponies would have faced Conrad and conference rival Browning over the stretch, but will have to move on, and gear up for two more conference opponents this weekend. Havre High freshman Dani Wagner takes a swing during a high school girls softball game earlier t...

  • Is justice finally coming to Rocky Boy?

    Tristan

Editor: I was appalled to hear that the scheduled Chippewa Cree tribal council Friday morning wasn't attended by the eight councilmen who, instead of trying to go through with the meeting, chose to run away from it. Instead, they sent the cops to deliver a impeachment or "suspension" notice, which by the way was illegal in itself being there is a six-month grace period for doing such things in the first place, not to mention Chairman St. Marks is protected by a whistleblowers program by talking to the inspectors general. To...

  • Tax reform: The devil is in the details

    State Sen. Greg Jergeson

This session, we are being treated to a number of bills proposing to simplify the Montana income tax system. Nearly everyone agrees with the basic premise of simplification. However, when an actual bill is proposed, the devil is in the details. One bill we have been grappling with in the Senate Taxation Committee on the topic, SB 282, proposes to replace the current Montana list of credits, deductions, and additions on the Montana form and replace it with the federal schedules instead. While the federal income tax regime is f...

  • Montana House backs bipartisan budget plan

    Matt Gouras

HELENA — Even the architects of a surprising bipartisan House budget deal didn't expect the unprecedented unanimous vote from the chamber on Tuesday. "I had no idea in my wildest imagination," Republican Rep. Duane Ankney of Colstrip said after a 100-0 vote on a roughly $9 billion spending plan. "Wow," said Democratic Rep. Galen Hollenbaugh of Helena. The chamber broke into applause Tuesday morning after endorsing the budget in a little over an hour — a process has taken days in the past. There was no debate or dissent — alth...

  • Montana Senate supports bear-hunting measure

    Tristan

HELENA (AP) — The Senate is backing a bill that reduces from five days to 24 hours the time hunters have to wait after purchasing a license to hunt black bears. Republican Sen. Fred Thomas of Stevensville says House Bill 278 would allow for consistency in the law by requiring the same waiting period to hunt bears as that for wolves. Opponents argued the measure would increase incidences of poaching. They point to a 1994 Fish, Wildlife and Parks study that concluded that Montanans preferred the five-day waiting period. Some 2...

As of this morning, the Sugarbeeters took about a 4 percent lead in the regional contest for the best school mascot sponsored by USA Today. The second round of the contest was extended to this week after heavy traffic on USA Today's servers pretty well shut down the site last Friday. Chinook was one of six schools that advanced to the...

  • Sequestration on the Hi-Line

    Tim Leeds

With across-the-board federal budget cuts now assured, officials in north-central Montana are making similar comments — most everything in the region will be impacted, but it still is too early to know exactly what will happen. "What are we expecting by sequestration?" Hill County Commission Chair Mike Wendland said in an interview last week. "We really don't know." The automatic cuts, known as a sequester, were put in place in 2011 as part of negotiations by a joint U.S. House and Senate committee tasked with reducing the de...
