  • Celebrating history: Put a lid on gambling

    Emily Mayer|Updated Jan 30, 2016

In last week's column, there was a letter from a Mr. Wilson calling Havre "One Wicked Little City." Its contents had clearly been maligning Havre's vices and its prominence within the business district. There was no response in Havre's defense in the newspapers this week, but on the front page of The Hill County Democrat's Jan. 29, 1916 issue, the city of Havre was finally taking notice-again: LID IS ON FOR GOOD Mayor D. S. MacKenzie, through the police department, has put...

    Paul Dragu|Updated Jan 29, 2016

Ryan Schafer was going to jail. He was already on probation when he committed his fifth offense. "I have a problem with drinking, and when I get drunk I commit crimes," is one of the first things Schafer said in an interview with Havre Daily News. Schafer drank to the point of blacking out. One of his favorite crimes to commit was stealing cars. He'd taken a total of seven cars during his inebriated bandit career. His blackouts were so severe that he once unknowingly helped...

  • Pastor's Corner: "It is better to give than to receive"

    Kevin Barsotti, Ark Church|Updated Jan 29, 2016

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. — 1 Timothy 6:17 The Bible has much to say about finances. Regarding this upcoming election cycle, some of the area pastors have been praying that God would put into office leaders who would follow what He has to say about money. You and I can follow the above verse through the power of the Holy Spirit and make a d...

  • View from the North 40: Reality check, right in the chompers

    Pam Burke|Updated Jan 29, 2016

I broke a significantly sized corner off a front tooth when I was 10 years old. Sorry to make you cringe right out of the gate. I was at the public swimming pool and as I was getting out of the water my hands slipped off the gutter. I slammed my mouth into the cement. It could have been worse, but I still remember looking in the mirror, choking back tears and the sickness in my gut. I was sure I was going to look wretched and stupid for the rest of my life. I was 10. I...

  • Lights sink Argos for a much-needed win

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 29, 2016

Winning just one out of six games over the last three weeks at the Armory Gymnasium, the Montana State University-Northern Lights were on the brink of letting their season get away from them. But, it's funny how one game is all a team needs to turn things around. And that's what the Lights are hoping Thursday night's 54-42 win over the UGF Argos in Great Falls will do for them. The victory in the McLaughlin Center avenged UGF's one-point win in Havre back on Jan. 11, and it al...

  • Talented Bison hold off HHS girls in the corral

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 29, 2016

There are times when, no matter how hard you fight, no matter much you don't give up, there are just some holes which are too big to dig your way out of. And that was the story for the Havre High girls basketball team Thursday night inside the HHS gymnasium. The Blue Ponies fell behind Class AA rival Great Falls High 20-2 after one quarter, and though HHS gave a valiant effort from there, it wasn't enough as the Bison left Havre with a 53-33 win. "They (Bison) did a nice job...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 29, 2016

From start to finish, the Havre High boys basketball team played some of its best basketball of the season Thursday night in the Swarthout Fieldhouse, but in the end, it just wasn't enough to take down the Bison, who...

  • Nationals head to Billings in search of wins

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 29, 2016

The Glacier Nationals have gone some time without winning a game, but with a trip to Billings on tap this weekend, they will have as good a chance as any they have had in the past three months. That's because the Nationals last victory in the Frontier Division of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League, came on Oct. 10 when the team defeated Billings by the score of 5-2. And recently when the Nationals went to Billings two weeks ago, they led in back-to-back games against the...
