  • Job titles can change, but my dedication to our area sports never will

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 2, 2021

The cat is out of the bag. I am no longer just the sports editor at the Havre Daily News. Although, if you read our sports section every day, and I hope you do, you wouldn't know it because I have been writing a lot of stories the last three months. Still, while doing that, I have also spent the last month training to become the new publisher here at the HDN, as my good friend and awesome colleague Stacy Mantle has now officially retired from her publisher job. So with that...

  • Hi-Line Boys BB: Box Elder, CJI win big District 9C games

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 2, 2021

High School boys basketball on the Hi-Line is already about to begin its second month. But, plenty of teams ended January on a high note. Last Tuesday night saw Fort Benton continue its winning ways with a 71-29 win over Big Sandy. The game was a rematch of last year's Northern C championship, but, this time around, the Pioneers just didn't match up well, as Fort Benton started the game on an 18-5 and never looked back. For Benton had 13 players reach the box score with...

  • Frontier Notebook: Hoops reaches halfway point of a challenging season

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 2, 2021

In more ways than one, it was a tough week for the Frontier Conference in basketball, as COVID-19 continues to play a role. Nevertheless, the league has indeed reached the halfway point of what has been a historic and challenging season. Story lines on both sides after one month of league play include canceled games, but most everyone in the league was prepared for that. Beyond COVID, though, the Frontier women have somewhat gone according to par thus far, as Carroll College...

  • Letter to the editor - Thanks for reminder of lives lost to COVID

    Updated Feb 2, 2021

Dear Editor: What a wonderful thing to do! The white ribbons and explanations taped under them are a good reminder of the Hill County lives that we have lost due to the pandemic. Thank you to the creators and those who put them up in Fifth Avenue. I watched the memorial that was held in Washington, D.C., as part of inauguration activities which was very moving. I talked to the president of the Greater Havre Area Ministerial Association about possibly doing a memorial service this summer outdoors to honor those who have died...

  • Letter to the Editor - Sportsmen beware. SB-143

    Updated Feb 2, 2021

Editor, Montana voters passed I-161 in 2010 to limit guaranteed outfitter tags. The current legislature, sponsor Sen. Jason Ellsworth, R-Hamilton, has introduced SB-143 which negates I-161 thus bypassing the will of Montana voters. This bill proposes to double the number of guaranteed outfitter licenses thus reducing non-outfitted non-residents. States which provide unrestricted landowner tags like proposed in this bill have experienced significant loss of public hunting opportunity. Landowners can sell those tags to the...

  • Honeymoon is over but work needs to be done

    Updated Feb 2, 2021

The honeymoon is over. The gloves are coming off. No more Mr. Nice guys. We are beginning to see more and more dissension in chamber. Little jabs and uncalled for remarks; it is not the way I like to see business conducted. If you watch the State of the State and the minority rebuttal you would have seen what I am referring to. This is not happening as much in the Senate, as there has not been near the turnover of legislators during the last election cycle as the House had. Many are new lawmakers to this process and want to m...

  • Democrats leading the way on jobs, tax cuts for working Montanans

    Updated Feb 2, 2021

Last week, Gov. Greg Gianforte, for the first time since taking office, shared his vision for our state — a vision that is limited to massive giveaways for Montana’s wealthiest, and gives quiet approval for an unprecedented barrage of attacks on the freedoms of Montana’s women and children. Democrats have a better plan that aims to meet the challenges of our time by creating jobs and opportunity for Montanans. Rather than prioritizing out-of-state interests, Democrats are investing in the people who live here, have roots...
