  • Airport fixing 30 years of incorrect power bills

    Paul Dragu|Updated Feb 13, 2017

For more than 30 years, the Havre City-County Airport has been paying power bills for nonexistent services, airport and city officials say. Airport manager Tony Dolphay discovered about six months ago that the airport has been paying NorthWestern Energy, formerly Montana Power Co., electric bills for 163 unmetered runway lights that don’t exist. A 1985 lighting project converted the runway lights from unmetered to metered. The runway lights bill went from a consistent flat rate to a metered rate — electricity was now cha...

  • Lights win in Butte, again

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

They say, it’s hard to beat the same team three times in one season. But the Montana State University-Northern Lights made the feat look pretty easy Saturday night. On the road in Butte, the Lights were gunning for a third straight win over the Montana Tech Orediggers, and thanks to some hot shooting, Northern did just that with a 76-62. Saturday night’s win also allowed the Lights to stay in the top half of the Frontier Conference standings with just four games left. Northern...

  • Wild blow by Nationals in Gillette

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

The Glacier Nationals were hoping to build on a streak-busting win over the Billings Bulls last Friday night in Havre. Unfortunately, the Gillette Wild were just too good. Glacier made its last long road trip of the season, traveling to Gillette, Wyoming for a pair of NA3HL Frontier Division games against the Wild — and falling in both contests. Gillette has one of the top defenses in the Frontier, and it showed both nights. On Friday night, the Wild beat the Nationals 12-2 a...

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

The Havre High girls basketball team has had some tough battles with Class B opponents in recent weeks. The Blue Ponies got another one on senior night. Saturday night at the HHS gymnasium, HHS seniors Naomi Terry, Ceyara Plante, RayAn VandenBos and Kristen Nash played their final home game of their careers, and while it was tough, the Blue Ponies sent the seniors out with a 59-51 win over the Rocky Boy Morning Stars. “Our seniors played great tonight,” Pony head coach Dus...

  • Stars hold off charging Ponies

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

Just last month, the Havre High boys basketball team was blown out in a rivalry game at Rocky Boy. And while the Blue Ponies didn’t beat the Stars in the rematch, the game itself was a much different story. Rocky Boy came into the HHS gymnasium Saturday night and left with a 61-51 win, closing out its regular season. But the win didn’t come without a big fight from the Blue Ponies, who led 16-12 on a 3-point barrage. Isaac Warp hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter, and...

  • Blue Ponies swim to the finish line

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

GREAT FALLS — The Montana State Swimming Championships is the toughest test of swimming many young swimmers will ever face. But it’s also the most exciting. Thus, it was a tough, and exciting two days for the Havre Blue Ponies as they competed at the state meet Friday and Saturday at the Swarthout Pool in Great Falls. The Havre girls came to the meet as the defending Class A state champions, and the Ponies left Great Falls with a solid 31 points, and a third-place finish. In...

  • State B-C Wrestling: Niederegger shows his heart at state

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

Billings - The Chinook wrestling team went to the All-Class State Wrestling meet hoping to repeat the magic it had in past seasons. And while that didn't quite happen, Tate Niederegger made sure the Sugarbeeters closed out the tournament and his career in an appropriate fashion. Going into the tournament, the Beeters had a slim hope of defending their Class C championship with just two wrestlers. Yet any hope of winning a team trophy went by the wayside when Niederegger lost...

  • HISTORICALLY HAVRE: Saturday night belonged to the Blue Ponies

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

Billings - As far as high school sports in Montana go, there is no single event that can rival finals night at the All-Class State Wrestling meet, and Saturday inside the Rimrock Auto Arena at the Metra, the Havre Blue Ponies once again owned the night. While the Blue Ponies have always had a big presence on finals night, HHS outdid itself this year, with a school-record tying seven finalists and five state champions, which also tied a previous high for the Ponies, done most... Full story

  • HISTORICALLY HAVRE: 4-timers

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

BILLINGS — The accomplishments of the Havre High wrestling program are hard to fathom. But what’s even harder to fathom is that before this past weekend, the Blue Ponies had never had a four-time individual state champion. Of course, that changed when Jase Stokes and Parker Filius made Havre High history Saturday night inside the Rimrock Auto Arena at the Metra, doing something no Blue Pony has ever done — become a four-time champ. “It’s bittersweet,” HHS head coach Scott Fili... Full story

  • HISTORICALLY HAVRE: 5-Peat

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 13, 2017

BILLINGS - Over the years, the Havre High wrestling team has had some memorable state tournaments inside the Rimrock Auto Arena at the Metra, but there was never a day quite like the one the Blue Ponies enjoyed Saturday. That's because Havre made history at the 2017 All-Class State Wrestling meet and it did so without batting an eye. HHS ran away with the team competition, securing a school-record fifth consecutive state championship with 257.5 points. Columbia Falls finished... Full story
