    Updated Feb 20, 2015

Emily Mayer There were several interesting articles in the Feb. 20, 1915 issues of The Havre Plaindealer and the Hill County Democrat regarding buildings. Both newspapers carried information about a proposed federal building, but the one in the Plaindealer had more information, complete with misspelling: ASKS FOR FEDERAL BUILDING IN HAVRE Tom Stout Seeks an Appropriation of $100,000 Telegraphic advices from Washington are to the effect that Congressman Tom Stout this week...

  • From the North 40: Plumbing avoidance issues

    Pam Burke|Updated Feb 20, 2015

When you suffer from what I like to call random obsessive compulsive disorder, as I do, there’s no telling what idea, concept, image, worry, question or song your brain is going to take hold of and run with — whether it’s actually important or not. Plumbing, the conduit which allows for the safe passage of both potable and waste waters, that’s important, right? I mean, if you are old enough to be reading this, you are old enough to be living as a potty-trained human individ...

  • Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

    Updated Feb 20, 2015

Laurel — Thousands of people are in Havre this week for the District 9-C basketball tournament. Small towns in Montana — and especially the Hi-Line — go crazy over basketball. The tourney is a social event as well as an athletic event. It is the time when even teams with the worst records can get a shot at the championship. Some of these small towns, we’re sure, have more people in Havre than at home. Welcome to Havre everyone. It’s great to have you here. Dart — No pig wrestling at the Great Northern Fair? • Hi-Line Living: Taxi cab confessions

    John Paul Schmidt|Updated Feb 20, 2015

Town Taxi service drivers see a lot of weird things, and they transport a lot of people they would want to meet, as well as the other kind, too. Rocky Arellano has been a taxi driver in Havre for three years after doing various odd jobs around town - Bear Paw Lumber, Taco John's, driving for BNSF - but, driving a taxi has been an experience. "It's interesting; I'll put it that way," he said. "There are a lot of strange people, obnoxious people, drunks, idiots." But, he added,...

  • Out Our Way: How many Montanans are there?

    Updated Feb 20, 2015

Out our way, folks from across the rest of the country see us as Montanans. They see folks from Miles City, Great Falls, Missoula and Butte as Montanans, too. It’s only in Montana we make note of the difference. Years ago, I was at a PBR event — Professional Bull Rider circuit — and Flint Rasmussen — once a teacher in Havre and now the main entertainer in the PBR — went up into the stands in Billings and asked a man where he was from. “Kalispell,” the man replied. “Well,” said Flint, “welcome to Montana.” Most of t...

  • District 9C Extra: Charlie's impact is eternal

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

The 2015 District 9C boys and girls basketball tournament has all the makings of another great one. It has great teams, great fans, exciting games, an electric atmosphere and a great venue. Yet again, it’s simply one of the best high school basketball tournaments in the state of Montana. But, no matter how much fun, no matter how exciting this week at the 9C tournament turns out to be, something’s missing. More to the point, someone is missing, and for those that have bee...

  • Beeters rock the Pioneers

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

The Chinook Sugarbeeters were heavy favorites going into their first-round game against Big Sandy in the District 9C boys basketball tournament. And right from the get-go, it was easy to see why as the Beeters were the superior team from start to finish. The Beeters were so dominant in their 61-36 victory over the Pioneers Thursday night in the HHS gymnasium that it took Big Sandy nearly 10 minutes of game time to finally score. By that time, Chinook had scored 23 unanswered...

  • Hawks fly into 9C boys semis

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

A year ago, the Chester/J-I Hawks were playing in the District 10C tournament and the Fort Benton Longhorns and Geraldine Tigers were two different teams playing against each other in the 8C tourney in Great Falls. But a lot can change in a year. After a long absence, C/J-I is back in the 9C, and the Fort Benton-Geraldine Longhorns/Tigers are as well, only as a co-op. And Thursday afternoon, one of them was going to get their first 9C tournament win as they faced off in a...

  • Turner wins historic 9C game

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

It’s been a few years since the Turner Tornadoes girls basketball team won a game at the District 9C tournament. And that’s why the postseason win Turner notched Thursday in the 9C tournament was more meaningful than the average win in consolation play. In addition to getting a big win for their program, the Tornadoes, who knocked off Hays-Lodge Pole 50-42 in loser-out action inside the HHS gymnasium, also stayed alive in the tournament, advancing to the next round in the con...

  • First Time: Fort Benton-Geraldine knocks off C/J-I

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

The Fort Benton-Geraldine Longhorns have had to overcome challenges most teams have not had to this season. So when they were faced with a nine-point deficit in the semifinals of the District 9C tournament, they didn’t bat an eye. And in the end, that composure came in handy as the Longhorns came up clutch in the key moments to upset second-seeded Chester/J-I 35-32 Thursday night at the Havre High gymnasium. With the win, the Longhorns advance to the 9C title game and the Nort...

  • Pony boys host Browning on senior day Saturday

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

It’s rare for late season conference games to have little or no meaning, but that’s exactly the situation the Havre High boys basketball team finds itself in ahead of Saturday’s home game against Browning. Certainly, the Blue Ponies want to win, especially considering it will be senior day, and the final time that Michael Bakke, Jase Kato and Wyatt Lindbloom play inside the HHS gymnasium. But other than that, HHS will gain very little with a win over the Indians, who will...

  • Skylights thrash Bulldogs

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

The Montana State University-Northern women’s basketball team’s defense has been superb all season long. But in the two games the Skylights have played against the UM-Western Bulldogs, they’ve taken that defense to a whole other level. Thursday night in Dillon, the No. 11 Skylights held Western to under 40 points for the second time this season as Northern won 66-33. Not only did the victory give the Skylights a season sweep of Western, it also extended their current winning s...

  • Lights set to host NAIA West Regional

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

There are just two weeks left in the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team’s season. But, oh, are they a big two weeks. One of those weeks is the upcoming NAIA national tournament next month. However, before the Lights can get to the national tourney, which will be held in Topeka, Kansas, March 6-7, they have to get through their own Western Regional Qualifier. Fortunately for the Lights, that tough tournament will be held on their home mats as Northern hosts the r...

  • Box Elder boys run over Turner

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

The Box Elder Bears are the two-time defending District 9C boys champions. They're also on a mission to win a second straight Class C state championship. And for much of the season, no one has been able to hang with them. But, the mighty Bears showed no signs of getting complacent or of overlooking the competition Thursday afternoon as they dismantled the Turner Tornadoes 97-37 in the opening game of the 2015 9C boys tournament inside the HHS gymnasium. "We're always focused,...

  • Thunderbirds soar on day one

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

The first two games of the first round of the District 9C boys tournament turned out to be complete mismatches. But in the third game of the day, it looked like the North Star Knights were going to buck that trend. However, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds had other ideas. In a game that North Star led 7-2 in the first quarter, third-seeded HLP turned it into a laugher as the T-Birds buried the Knights 69-41 Thursday afternoon at the Havre High gymnasium. With the win, HLP...

  • ROARING BEARS

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 20, 2015

All season long, the Chinook Sugarbeeters have been the class of the District 9C in girls basketball. They lost just one game and rolled to the regular season title. But after one uncharacteristic performance, their season is suddenly hanging in the balance. The Beeters, who were the top-seeded team entering the 9C tournament, took on fourth-seeded Box Elder in the semifinals inside the HHS gymnasium in Havre Thursday night. And in a game that had plenty of intrigue from...
