  • Petition to allow urban chickens gains more support

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Jun 5, 2023

Editor’s note: A version of this story in Thursday’s edition of Havre Daily News misreported that Havre City Council previously approved people having chickens in city limits, which it did not. Following is the corrected version in full. Havre resident Al Garver is continuing his efforts to push the city to make owning chickens in city limits legal, gathering more than 450 signatures for a petition for the city to change its ordinance. The city of Havre in 2015 considered a proposal to allow people to own chickens pro...

  • Letter to the Editor - I can't help but wonder …

    Updated Jun 2, 2023

Editor, It’s Memorial Day. I attended the always-moving ceremony at the courthouse and knew many of the living and recognized a lot of the names those who have passed this year. It always is my thought that no tribute ever is enough for those who have given so much for this nation and sacrificed so greatly. I can’t help but wonder if more than just a few of us at the courthouse sadly thought about Congress possibly holding veterans benefits, surviving family benefits and medical opportunities, etc., basically hostage for pol...

  • View from the North 40: This should be National Word Appreciation week

    Pam Burke|Updated Jun 2, 2023

In honor of 14-year-old Dev Shah of Florida, who won the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday, this week’s column is about official words. Scripps uses the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary as its official word source, but here in the news world we consult The Associated Press Stylebook, first, and the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary, second — for spelling and usage of words that the AP stylebook does not cover. Or, as I like to say, only for words that AP...

  • Common Sense Investments for Havre and the Hi-Line

    Updated Jun 2, 2023

The dust seems to be settling on the 68th session of the Montana Legislature, and I want to thank the residents of House District 28 for allowing me the privilege of serving Havre and northern Montana in the House of Representatives. My time in Helena was, as expected, both very rewarding and at times frustrating. But by focusing my time and energy on the common-sense priorities for which I campaigned, and by working cooperatively across the partisan divide that is all-too prevalent these days, I was able to have good...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Looking through a flawed lens

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Jun 2, 2023

An acquaintance stopped by the other day for a visit. Most people would have said, a friend. Another man, a close friend from years ago, whom I miss terribly but can visit only in memory, used to say, we have few friends. Most people we know are business acquaintances. I’ve thought about his saying often. My visitor definitely fits into the transactional group. I’ve known him for several years now but I so easily forget the rules. (His.) I expect a visit to be an int...

  • Pastor's Corner: Witness to the way

    Updated Jun 2, 2023

"... you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 What does it mean to witness to Christ in our times? If images of street preachers, bible-thumpers, or door-to-door evangelists makes you shudder - you are not alone! I don't think standing on a street corner, preaching to the walkers or cars passing, has much appeal for anyone! Still, however...

The green grass grows next to the hills, birds fly 'round in the air; Flower perfume is everywhere, a scent we wish to wear. June's dawn is fresh, sweet and clear, the valleys lie in mist. There is no hast,...
