    Pam Burke|Updated Jun 21, 2019

I respectfully submit this column to my current employer as a tentative notice of my possible eminent resignation should my application for a job in Denmark as a happiness investigator pan out. Ikea, the assemble-it-yourself furniture and other-home-stuff company based in northern Europe, is working on a promotions gig in its Denmark branch. Specifically, they want to fill the full-time, temporary position of “happiness hunter.” It’s a two-week, all-travel-expense-paid trip...

  • Pastor's Corner: You are gifted

    Updated Jun 21, 2019

“80 percent of life is just showing up.” In times of crisis, a friend’s simple presence is priceless. A child in a school production or sporting event will scan the crowd for a familiar face to cheer them on. Showing up matters. “Present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice,” Paul writes. It’s the biblical version of this quote, reminding believers of the importance of showing up for God. We have to be people who embody what it means to live with Jesus Christ as our Lord, not anyone or anything else. Worship can be a pl...

  • Out Our Way: Seeking the signal

    Updated Jun 21, 2019

Out our way cellphones outnumber landlines, but it was not always that way. In rural Montana cell towers were somewhat rare and getting a signal could be a real task. On my first time out on the Tiger Ridge with Charlie, I was glad to get away from town. Even as only a part-time pastor for a small congregation, it seemed the phone in the study was always ringing. It had always been that way in my 40 years of pastoring, so it was a relief to get away. As Charlie and I saddled up and headed into the hills, the only sound was...

  • Imagining Heaven: Use the Bible as we minister to others

    Updated Jun 21, 2019

Many of the ideas and Scriptures used in this article are from the book “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. Matthew 22:30 states, “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” There will be one marriage in heaven, which will be between Christ and His bride. Our marriages on this earth can help prepare us for our marriage to Jesus. Randy Alcorn quoted C.S. Lewis in response to the disappointment some people feel at the idea of no sexual intercourse in Heaven. Lewis w...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Jun 21, 2019

You know, Lord, here’s a thought about the Wilderness, the Boondocks and the Backcountry. While we’re all busy traveling life’s demanding way, we can’t help but notice where the forest fires have ravaged the countryside; we notice that there are no lovely flowers, we see dead pine and fir trees, we also see a few other trees that are just standing there with lifeless limbs outstretched for help. However, we look around — there is no help — no birds — no green grass, it’s all been consumed, all that is left is charred, forlorn...
