Both Democrats and Republicans held events over the weekend, with candidates telling voters why they were the best selection in the midst of Festival Days celebrations. The Democrats held their annual Pasma-Peck fundraising dinner Friday night in the Eagles Club in Havre, with more than 40 people coming to the event. The Hill County Republican Central Committee saw nearly double that at its free meet-the-candidate meal at Pepin Park Saturday after the parade, although some people finished eating and left before the...

  • It's sad to imagine Havre without Bonnie

    John Kelleher|Updated Sep 22, 2014

The heart of Havre died last week. Bonnie Bennett was a shining example of what makes Havre so special. She had a heart of gold and was a first-class character to boot. There was hardly a special event in the city that Bonnie was not at — usually volunteering in some way. She served meals at the Eagles Club, worked with the American Legion Auxiliary and performed all kinds of tasks for the American Cancer Society. She was a waitress and bus girl at the Vets' Club and was devastated when it closed. She was proud to boast t...

  • Bonnie Bennett - a volunteer, tireless worker

    Rhonda Petersen|Updated Sep 22, 2014

I read about Bonnie Bennett’s passing on Facebook Friday night. I was shocked that such a fixture of the Havre community had died so suddenly. I had seen Bonnie Wednesday when she had come into the Havre Daily News office to purchase a newspaper. Over the last 15 years, I probably assisted Bonnie with that same transaction hundreds of times. In addition, she would come into the newspaper looking for extra copies when she was mentioned in the paper for her volunteer work around town. I still remember when we wrote a feature a...

Havre was in Billings for the Billings Central Invitational last Thursday, then the Ponies played at the Laurel Invitational Friday. In Billings, at Eaglerock Golf Course, the Blue Pony boys shot a 338 to finish third, while the HHS girls shot a 484 to place third. Billings Central, Laurel, Sidney and Glendive...

BOZEMAN (AP) — The much-anticipated showdown between Big Sky Conference powers Eastern Washington and Montana State lived up to its billing and then some. Mario Brown scored on a 1-yard run with 27 seconds left and quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. ran in the two-point conversion to lift Eastern Washington to a 52-51 non-conference victory over the Bobcats Saturday. The Bobcats (2-2) had forged ahead with 1:55 to play when Dakota Prukop threw his fourth touchdown pass of the g...

  • Pony runners faced the best

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 22, 2014

There is no cross country meet that has tougher competition than the Mountain West Classic and this past weekend, the Havre High cross country teams figured out just how difficult it is. Competing at the University Golf Course at Missoula Saturday, the Blue Ponies went head-to-head against the top runners from Montana as well as runners from Idaho and Washington. There were 53 teams on the boy’s side and 44 on the girl’s from all classifications. Up against such difficult com...

  • Ponies crush Red Devils for first win

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 22, 2014

Leading up to the fourth game of the season, the Havre High football team had played some good football, but for some reason the team had yet to put it all together. That changed Friday night as the Blue Ponies rediscovered their big-play offense and earned their first win of the season. In a nonconference tilt with Eastern A rival Glendive, the Ponies played well for four quarters and routed the Red Devils in Glendive by the score of 40-12. The win was the first of the...

  • Dawgs run by Lights

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 22, 2014

The Montana State University-Northern defense had really been putting up some strong numbers, and a strong front during the first three weeks of the 2014 season. But the Lights found out how the other half lives Saturday afternoon in Dillon. In a game that featured the top two defenses in the Frontier Conference, it was the offenses that took center stage Saturday at Vigilante Stadium, as the UM-Western Bulldogs raced past the Lights 50-30. The two teams came in each surrender...

Coming into the weekend, the Havre High volleyball team had yet to win a match, and because of that they were determined to walk away from the match against the Browning Indians as the victors, which is exactly what the Blue Ponies did. The Ponies made quick work of beating the Indians Friday night inside the HHS gymnasium. It took only three games as HHS dispatched of Browning, easily sweeping by the scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-16. "It was good to win and we were focused bu...

After four grueling weeks on the road, after some difficult losses at the hands of some very good teams, the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team couldn't have been happier to see the inside of the Armory Gymnasium. • Nationals fall in season, home debuts

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 22, 2014

It may seem strange to call the Glacier Nationals debut representing the community of Havre successful after dropping back-to-back games to open the season. But judging from the packed house at the Havre Ice Dome and the improved play from game one to game two, it definitely can't be deemed a failure. The Nationals opened play in the Frontier Division of the Northern American Tier 3 Hockey League Friday night against traditional power Helena, which defeated the Nationals in...
