    John Kelleher|Updated Sep 25, 2014

There is no shortage of interest in the four tribal council seats on the ballot in Rocky Boy’s fall elections. Fifty-six people filed for the seats on the Chippewa Cree Business Committee. The Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation’s primary election for four tribal seats will be Oct. 7. Voters are asked to go to the old Stone Child College gymnasium to submit their ballots. The primary elections will whittle down the list of 56 candidates to the eight top candidates. In conjunction with state elections, the general elections for t...

  • Conflicting testimony in murder trial

    Tim Leeds|Updated Sep 25, 2014

Jurors heard two sides of a story of how a man was shot to death Nov. 9, 2013, in a Havre residence. The prosecution contends Shane Johnson, born in 1968, went to his bedroom, took a Browning .22 caliber pistol out of its case after he got into a fight with his brother, Travis Johnson, and shot him in the head. But the defense said Shane Johnson was fighting for his life and collapsed on his bed in shock after a fight over the gun. The end of an ongoing struggle came when Travis Johnson “just would not let it go” and too...

  • Community Focus: Banned Books Week fights censorship

Rachel Rawn director Havre Hill County Library|Updated Sep 25, 2014

This is Banned Books Week. This is one of our favorite weeks here at the Havre-Hill County Library. It is an annual event celebrating intellectual freedom and the importance of the First Amendment. Banned Books Week is all about your right to read, even books that contain unorthodox and unpopular opinions. It is about your right to have these materials publicly available to you, so that you can form your own opinions and come to your own conclusions. Intellectual freedom is a cornerstone for democracy, and it is explicitly pr...

  • Looking Out My Backdoor: When I grow up, what will I be

    Sondra Ashton Local columnist|Updated Sep 25, 2014

In a note to a friend I mentioned that I have lived my life in chunks. The years on the ranch. Years raising my children. Years re-covering furniture. Years in theater. Years in city government. Those sorts of chunks. Some chunks overlap. Some chunks I have tried to bury far from memory. Others I treasure. All are part of what makes me, well, me. I wonder what will define this particular chunk of my life. Lord knows, it is different from all the others. Looking back, I can find clues to what led me to decisions I made. For...

  • Many thank-yous to many people for Festival Days work

    Debbie Vandeberg Executive director|Updated Sep 25, 2014

Events such as Havre Festival Days are a success because so many people join together to make it happen. Without the sponsors, the businesses, community organizations, the community support and the volunteers, Festival Days would look a whole lot different. The weekend’s success would not have been obtained without the continued support from the many volunteers and the willingness of the many entities of the community to come together on this third weekend in September to throw a community celebration for all to enjoy. Our m...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 25, 2014

After competing in one of the most difficult and demanding meets in all of Montana, the Havre High cross country teams will be back in action this week as they continue to prepare for the Central A divisional meet next month. Last week, the Blue Ponies ran at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula, which featured a host of Class AA and A schools from Montana as well as competition from other states such as Washington, Idaho and Wyoming. Now, HHS will run at Lewistown Friday...

  • Glacier looks for first wins

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 25, 2014

The Glacier Nationals got a rough introduction into the North American Tier 3 Hockey League last week, losing two games by the combined score of 18-2. Yet, after getting their feet wet in junior hockey, the Nationals are ready to get back on the ice in search of their first win. The Nationals will get their first chance at redemption Friday when they travel to Gillette, Wyoming, for the first of back-to-back games against the Wild, a rival team within the Frontier Division....

  • Skylights seek redemption on the road

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 25, 2014

Losing streaks are meant to be broken. And the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team is ready to shatter the one the Skylights are on. And they don't want to wait any longer. Northern (0-4, 4-13) has lost six straight matches, including its first four in Frontier Conference play. But the Skylights will try and end that streak tonight when they take on the Westminster Griffins in Salt Lake City. MSU-N remains on the road to face UM-Western Saturday in Dillon. The...

  • Frontier Notebook: Frontier title chase still a mystery

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 25, 2014

The first quarter of the Frontier Conference football season is in the books. And while teams have learned plenty about themselves through their first three or four games, I'm not sure the league has learned anything about what might happen come November. If anything, we've learned that there's a long way to go, a lot of big games to be played, and any number of different Frontier schools still have a chance at the Frontier championships. Last Saturday's NAIA Game of the Week...
