Our View: Coming through for the Havre Food Bank

Civic groups, school organizations and social clubs have all done their part in recent weeks in contributing to the Havre Food Bank.

It's been heartwarming to see the community response to the plea sent out by the food bank, which is faced with the double whammy of seeing an increase in demand for food while government support is being cut back.

Havre has once again come through, showing its deep concern for people in need.

With the decline in the economy, more of our friends and neighbors need food to get by, especially at the end of each month.

The food bank has always been there to help people in tough straits, but the demand has been growing in recent months.

The food bank operates on a shoestring. There is only one part-time staffer. Penny Velk has been very dedicated in helping Havre's needy. But without the volunteers, she couldn't get her job done.

Food bank recipients won't be dining in high style, but they will get enough nutritious foods they need to get by.

The donations of food, money and volunteer services will help the needy get what they need over the holiday season.

But it's important to remember the recipients the rest of the year as well.

If you feel you can contribute, mail or drop off your financial contribution to District IV HRDC, 2259 5th Ave., Havre.

If you have time you can donate. Stop by the food bank at 453 5th St. N.

Or, if you have some food to donate, the food bank will be glad to accept that donation, too.
