Pony girls sweep Central A rivals

If there was any question on how the Havre High girls basketball team was going to rebound after an 0-2 start to the season, the Blue Ponies cleared things up right away.

After a two-game slide out of the gate, the Central A Ponies are now on a two-game winning streak after two wins over the weekend.

On Friday, the Ponies defeated the Belgrade Panthers 58-46 in Belgrade, and on Saturday, the Ponies followed suit with a 64-42 win

over the Livingston Rangers in Livingston. HHS is now 2-2 on the season and 2-0 in the conference.

In the first game of the weekend, the Ponies used a big second half to run away from the Panthers.

The Ponies led 26-25 at the half, but Brandy Lambourne erupted in the second half to boost the Ponies to a win. All of Lambourne's points came in the final two quarters, as she paced the Ponies with a game-high 19 points. The Ponies' 19-point fourth quarter was key, but so was the third quarter by the HHS defense, as they allowed just nine points by the Panthers.

Peyton Filius also kicked in 14 points for the Ponies, while Neya Bischoff added eight, and Tori Mazurkiewicz and Haley Ohm combined for 12 more.

It was a solid, and consistent outing for the Ponies on Friday, and that carried over into Saturday afternoon as well.

HHS went off for 64 points offensively in Livingston, and did so with balanced scoring for four quarters. They posted 16 in the opening frame, and followed with 17 in the second quarter, 17 in the third quarter, and 14 in the fourth. Lambourne had another huge game, and led all scorers with 19 for the second straight night.

Morgan Mazurkiewicz also finished with 14 for the Ponies, while Filius finished with 12 of her own.

The HHS defense also allowed just one double-digit scorer in Megan Schoenen, who finished with 10 points. The Pony defense held the Rangers to seven points in the final frame as they continued to gain ground on Livingston.

The Ponies will have one game heading into the holiday break, hosting the Class AA Great Falls High Bison at the Havre High gymnasium. HHS will host the Bison on Thursday at 7 p.m.
