Hi-Line darts and laurels

It's the holiday season, and there is not much to dart along the Hi-Line. So here are some laurels:

Laurel — The Hill County Conservation District is completing a restoration of land at Beaver Creek Park. A road was in disrepair, so people created other paths to their cabins. That left some of the tender land with ruts all over it. That endangers the creek and the soil with the water runoff. The district's efforts are an important part of maintaining the park, Hill County's real jewel.

Laurel _ Harley Edmonds, a Havre Middle School student, is a great example to people of all ages. Several years ago, when her father was laid off, her family got all of its Christmas gifts from the Salvation Army. Now, she wants to help the Salvation Army help other people in the same situation. She is collecting wrapping paper that will be used on gifts for kids this Christmas as a Girl Scout project. Harley is teaching us that it is OK to accept help from agencies when you need the help. And then, when you are back on your feet, help those who are still in need. Thank you, Harley, for helping the Salvation Army and for teaching us a worthwhile lesson.

Laurel — The Havre Jaycees opened their hearts to help out a 16-year-old live a more fulfilling life. Sixteen-year-old Frankie Walter now has an iPad he can use to communicate with other people — many of whom he has never been able to fully communicate with before. Frankie is a Havre High School student and has been non-verbal from birth. When the Jaycees heard of his needs, they stepped forward to help out. It is one of the many generous things that area civic groups — the Jayvees and many others — provide to our community. The Havre Daily News next year will be highlighting these organizations and what they do to help out. Until then, thanks to the Jaycees.
