HHS thinclads competitive in Lewistown

The Havre high boys and girls track teams were back in action over the weekend, and both Blue Pony squads continue to put up solid numbers.

Saturday, the Central A Ponies attended their third meet of the season, as they they traveled to the Central Montana Invitational in Lewistown.

In boys action, the Ponies finished the weekend in fourth place with 58 points. Conference rival Belgrade finished in first with 126, while Billings Central finished in second with 98 and conference rival Lewistown finished in fourth with 70 points. Other team finished included Livingston with 49, Big Timber with 45, Belt with 26, Fort Benton with 18, Stanford with 16, Cascade with 9, Harlowton with 6, Centerville with 4, Winnett with 2 and Shields Valley with 1.

And on the girls side of things, the Ponies almost saw identical team results as they finished with in fourth place with 42 points. Belgrade was first with 159, Lewistown was second with 82, and Billings Central was third with 72. Big Timber also finished with 42, wile Livingston finished with 26, Cascade finished with 22, Belt finished with 18, Hobson finished with 14, Shelby finished with 12, Shields Valley finished with 10, Winnett-Grass Range finished with 7, Harlowton finished with 6, Stanford finished with 4, Denton finished with 2, Fort Benton finished with 2 and Centerville finished with 1 team point.

"It was good for our kids to go out and see what kind of talent we are going to be up against (Belgrade, Lewistown, and Livingston) at our divisional track meet in Livingston," Havre High head coach Trevor VanCampen said. "But Belgrade is the team to beat again in the Central A. Every year, they just have so many kids, they make it hard to matchup with them."

And some of the HHS athletes looked very good against the tough field of competitors.

Thurman Holdsclaw placed in two events, the triple jump and pole vault. Holdsclaw was No. 1 in the pole vault with a cleared height of 12-6, but also placed second in the triple jump after jumping 38-8. Zach Plum also had a solid outing in two events. Plum was second in the long jump with a distance of 19-4, while also finishing behind Holdsclaw in the pole vault with a cleared height of 12-0.

Jon Faber and Charlie Christianson also finished in fourth and fifth place in the high jump, respectively, as they both cleared a height of 5-6. And Thomas Gruber finished in third place in the pole vault after clearing 11-6, while Matt Emge finished the pole vault in fourth place after clearing 11-5. Marc Klimas also finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run (10:51.8), and the short relay team was able to grab a fourth place finish (47.31).

Peyton Filius and Katie Christianson were both able to place in two events each to lead the HHS girls yet again.

Filius earned a third-place finish in the 400 with a time of 1:05.82, while also earning a fourth-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:30.4. Christianson had similar results, as she placed fifth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:50.5, as well as placed fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 12:51.6.

Both relay teams also placed, as did four more HHS athletes.

The short relay finished sixth with a time of 56.6 seconds, while the long relay team was able to finish in fourth place with a time of 4:41.6. Neya Bischoff also placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 89-3, while Carlene Rennick finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 85-8. Martha Stocker continues to improve and impress in her first HHS track season, as she placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 29-6.

Lacey Waid won her third consecutive pole vault event on Saturday. She has cleared as high as 9-6 this season, and captured the No. 1 spot again, this time clearing 8-6.

As a whole, the Ponies are still looking for some new and young talent to step up and pitch in points. But while the Blue Ponies wait, the team has been relying on the consistent production from a very talented, and experienced nucleus of boys and girls competitors.

"Consistency is important, and it is crucial in track," VanCampen said. "You have to stay consistent, and you have consistently improve your marks and times as well. But we are a fairly young team, young in age and experience. Our older kids have been the ones to step up and the ones who have been producing, but like I said, we are young, and I think we are still trying to find our identity and working on improving our technique."

Havre will get right back into action with two more meets this week. Thursday at 3:30 p.m. the Ponies will host a triangular with North Star and Chinook. And on Saturday, the Ponies will host the annual Lions Invite beginning at 9 a.m. Both events will take place at the Havre Middle school track in Havre.
