Hi-Line Boys Roundup: Big Sandy, Rocky Boy roll on

Last week's snowstorm brought local basketball to a screeching halt, but after the short delay in action, a handful of games did get played late in the weekend.

On Friday, the 10C Chester-J/I Hawks were the only local team to take the floor. But the Hawks weren't able to grab the home win, as Heart Butte defeated C/J-I 55-50 in Chester.

Chester/J-I's Mike Henke, left, pulls a rebound away from Chinook's Grant Tilleman during Saturday night's Class C boys basketball game in Chinook. The Hawks edged the Sugarbeeters in a thriller.

The Hawks got off to a slow start, trailing 22-5 after the first quarter. But finding a way to heat things up in the second frame, the Hawks were able to make the game more competitive down the stretch. The Hawks posted 21 in the second quarter, nine in the third and 15 in the fourth. Heart Butte's seven point fourth quarter nearly allowed the Hawks to come from behind for a win.

C/J-I was led by Dell Harmon's 13 points, and Jordan Oraw's nine.

The Hawks were also back in action on Saturday, as they took on the 9C Chinook Sugarbeeters in Chinook.

This time the Hawks found a way to win, defeating the Beeters 51-49.

Chinook nearly put the Hawks away after another slow start by C/J-I. Chinook led 15-5 after the first frame, but the Hawks returned the favor with a 10-3 outscoring of the Beeters in the second quarter. The Beeters dominated the third frame, but the Hawks' 22 points I in the fourth was enough to ensure the win.

Zach Molyneaux led the Beeters with 16 points, while Justin May led the Hawks with 12. Harmon added 10.

Chinook's Lane Seymour, right, hoists up a shot during a Class C boys game between the Beeters and Chester/J-I Saturday night in Chinook.

C/J-I will be back in action on Friday when they host Sunburst, and on Saturday when they travel to Simms. The Beeters will face North Star on the road on Friday, and will host Box Elder on Saturday.

In more 9C action Saturday, the Box Elder Bears and Turner Tornadoes also faced off on Saturday. The Bears defeated the Tornadoes 66-47 in Turner.

The Tornadoes put up a fight through the first eight minutes, but still trailed by three points. The Bears then took over and steadily distanced themselves from the Tornadoes. Turner did put up 18 in the fourth quarter, but Box Elder's 18 in the second, 21 in the third and 13 in the fourth was too much to match.

Randall Gardipee led the Bears with 25 points, while Lonnie Plain Bull Jr. added 14. Turner got a game-high 26 points from Lucas Reed.

The Bears will host Big Sandy on Friday before facing Chinook on the road on Saturday. Turner will host Dodson on Friday before hosting North Star on Saturday.

Chinook's Scott Schmitt flies in for a scoop during Saturday night's game in Chinook.

North Star has struggled all season long, and on Saturday, the Big Sandy Pioneers took full advantage in another 9C matchup. The Pioneers dominated the Knights 80-46.

Big Sandy was paced by Jerry Hanson's 16, but also got 14 from Trevor Lackner and 13 from Kaden Beck. Kyle Strutz also added 11 points to the mix. North Star was led by Gavin Spinler's 16 and Cooper Spicher's 12.

Big Sandy travels to Box Elder on Friday and will host Denton on Saturday. North Star will host Chinook on Friday and will face Turner on the road on Saturday.

In Class B action, the Rocky Boy Stars are still undefeated on the season, though Saturday's win came by just three points. The Stars defeated Choteau 76-73 in Rocky Boy.

After holding a 10-point lead through the first quarter, the Stars entered the break holding an eight-point lead over Choteau. The Bulldogs outscored the Stars 19-17 in the third quarter and 25-22 in the fourth, but the narrow lead the Stars were able to build in the first half was just enough to get Rocky Boy the win.

Junior Day Child led the Stars with 22 points, while Elijah Gopher, Desmond Parker, and Darien Lafromboise all scored 11 points.

Rocky Boy will host Harlem on Friday and will travel to Cut Bank on Saturday.
