Ellen was born April 17, 1930, in Havre, to Mark Sr. and Josephine (Emily) Mayer. She was the oldest of eight siblings. Ellen was nicknamed "Dee Dee" by her grandmother, Annie (Pogreba) Mayer, and it was the name everyone knew her by. Ellen helped out at home when her mom needed an extra hand taking care of all the kids, especially the two sets of twins that were born. Ask anyone who knew her, she was a very generous person always helping those in need and enjoyed giving gifts to others. She attended schools in Havre at St. Jude's and Havre High.

Ellen fell in love with Eldon Cameron and a daughter, Candace, was born to that union. They lived on the farm in Kremlin for a short while. Later Ellen and Eldon separated. Ellen then married Ivan Stubban, and they owned and operated a nightclub called The Club Royal in Dillon, Mont., later moving to Havre.

Ellen was a hard worker and started working at the age of 9 at the Sacred Heart Hospital for the nuns cleaning bathrooms. She used her first paycheck to buy her youngest brother David a new pair of cowboy boots. She worked on a dairy farm and as a bartender for many establishments in Havre and Shelby Later on she managed the 300 Club Bar for Leo Kraft, cooking wonderful food for smorgasbords and hiring bands to play there, including her future son-in-law Kevin. Later she worked for the Havre airbase cooking, the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd as a CNA and her most current job as a night auditor at Super 8 until June 2013.

Ellen often invited family and friends over to her house to partake of the large delicious meals she would cook. She made the best fried chicken and salads. She loved collecting antique dishes, crystal, dolls and artwork. She thought it was important to keep alive the generations of family history and family photos so as to pass this along to the all the family.
