HHS names Athletes of the Year

The school year ended Tuesday, and with it, another sports season at Havre High also came to an end.

In the race for the Great Falls Tribune All Sports trophy, Havre High finished with 46 total points and three Class A state placings. Havre finished in 13th place overall and was fifth among Class A schools.

Bozeman High won the trophy with six different Class AA state championships and a total of 128 points. Points are awarded to the top four teams in each class in their respective MHSA-sanctioned sport. For football, volleyball, basketball, softball and track, points are awarded on a 25-15-10-5 basis, while for all other sports, points are 12-9-6-3. Corvallis finished in second place and was the top Class A school. Other Class A schools to finish ahead of Havre were Billings Central, Columbia Falls and Whitefish.

Belt finished in fourth place overall and was the top-ranked Class C school for the year. Chinook finished with 30 total points, including winning a state championship in girls tennis. Box Elder’s Class C state boys basketball titled vaulted the school to 25 points. North Star also made the list, scoring 10 points for the year. The top Class B school was Missoula Loyola, with 67 points. Neither local Class B schools, Harlem or Rocky Boy, scored points in this year’s competition.

Havre’s main points came from Class A state championships in wrestling and girls basketball. The Havre High boys tennis team also garnered a third-place trophy at the Class A state tournament two weeks ago in Billings.

Havre High also honored its Athletes of the Year and three-sport athletes at Monday night’s spring sports banquet. Peyton Filius was named HHS Female Athlete of the Year. Filius was a Class A All-State basketball player, while also running cross country in the fall. She also placed sixth in the Class A 800 meters at last weekend’s Class A state track meet in Butte. Thomas Gruber was named HHS Male Athlete of the Year. Gruber was an All-Conference and All-State football player for the Blue Ponies, an All-State wrestler for four seasons and an All-Central A pole vaulter this spring for the Pony track team. Havre High also had 37 student-athletes participate in three different spots this school year.
