Pony boys bring home medals, HHS girls gain experience

Jerod Boles and Jeff Miller earn Class A All-State golf honors

Nine Havre High golfers reached their ultimate goal by playing in this past weekend’s Class A state golf tournament. But the Blue Ponies weren’t just there to play, they were there to make the most out of it. And HHS did just that.

Four Blue Pony boys compiled a team total that would have earned them a third-place trophy at the state golf tournament, which was played at the Hamilton Golf Club Friday and Saturday. However, because HHS took third at the Central A Divisional, the Ponies couldn’t post an official team score at state. Still, Havre’s finish, which included juniors Jerod Boles and Jeff Miller earning Class A All-State honors, was exactly what head coach Brett Gilman wanted to see.

“It was a great weekend for the boys,” Gilman said. “Coming off a disappointing finish at divisionals, their spirits were a little dampened. But I told them they are fully capable of shooting scores that would put us in the top three at state, and that’s exactly what happened.”

Boles, playing in his third state tourney, led the Havre High charge that started in Thursday’s practice round when he aced the par-3 8th hole with a five iron from 185 yards away. The shot was witnessed by Miller, Dustin Haas and assistant coach Jeremy Jensen, and was Boles’ first career hole-in-one. That shot was a sign of things to come for Boles, who fired rounds of 84 and 78 to finish in eighth place overall. Boles’ 78 on Saturday moved him 12 spots up the leaderboard. Meanwhile, Miller came out strong on the first day, shooting an 81, then followed that up with an 83 on Saturday. Those scores put him in 12th place, giving Havre two All-State players for 2014.

“That was one of their main goals,” Gilman said. “To get in the Top 15 and be All-State for the season. And they both played well enough to make that happen.”

Sophomores Kane Gabrielsen and Dustin Haas were also playing in their second state tourney. Gabrielsen shot 86 on Friday and an 81 on Saturday, finishing in the Top 20, while Haas put up a 92 on Friday and an 87 on Saturday. And with all four players back for next season, Gilman sais the sky is the limit for the boys team.

“It’s no secret what the expectations are for next year,” Gilman said. “All four of them have a ton of state tournament experience now. They are all capable of putting up low numbers and they know how to handle the highs and lows of a state tournament. So the boys should have a very good season next year.”

While the HHS boys weren’t playing for a trophy this season, the young Havre High girls were. And though the Ponies weren’t in the trophy hunt, the experience they gained over the weekend in Hamilton was invaluable.

HHS finished with a team score of 1,008, which was eighth place. Junior Randie Gabrielsen led Havre with scores of 114 and 116, while Mackenzie Tilleman shot a career-best 119 on Friday and finished with a 130 Saturday. Regan Lammers shot rounds of 133 and 131 followed by Grace Litzinger, who shot 132-138 and Jordan Keith, who shot 141-133.

“It was a very good experience for them (girls),” Gilman said. “Four of them had never played a varsity tournament before this season, so to get second at divisionals and make it to state, they came a long way and they improved a lot this year.

“And they played pretty well at state,” he continued. “I think it showed them they can play with the girls at that level. And it gives them something to build on. So it was a good weekend for them.”

Hamilton won the Class A boys state championship with a team total of 643. Billings Central was second and Whitefish was third. Anaconda’s Caleb Stetzner earned medalist honors on the boys side. The Whitefish girls captured the state championship with a score of 756, while Laurel was second and Frenchtown was third. Whitefish’ Coral Schulz was the medalist on the girls side.
