Hi-Line Athletes of the Week

Tyrah Gopher, Box Elder Volleyball

Last year, the Box Elder Bears didn’t even compete in the District 6C East tournament. Nor did they in 2012 either. But in their first 6C East tourney in three years, the Bears showed they are back in volleyball, and Tyrah Gopher led the way. In Box Elder’s win over Big Sandy last Thursday in Chester, Gopher tallied 13 kills, giving the Bears their first tourney win in seven years. In four matches in Chester, Gopher racked up 38 kills, as well as 11 blocks. In the fourth-place match Friday, Gopher totaled a season-high 14 kills in a loss to C/J-I.

Jase Stokes, Havre Football

It will be a while before the Havre High football team gets over its heartbreaking, 48-47 loss to Miles City last Saturday in the first round of the Class A playoffs. But for sophomore Jase Stokes, it will be a game he’ll always remember. Stokes scored six touchdowns Saturday, on runs of 1, 8, 2, 26, 5 and 42 yards. Two different times during the game, Stokes, who was also HHS’s leading tackler on defense, scored on back-to-back possessions. Stokes, who is also a state champion wrestler for the Ponies, finished the game with 120 yards on the ground.
