What are librarians thankful for?

By Havre-Hill County Library staff

Librarians are thankful when the library is hustling and bustling, when there are smiles on our patrons’ faces, and when our books come back on time. Librarians are thankful when there’s hot coffee in the morning. Librarians are thankful when the library is clean and the books are in order. Librarians are thankful when the shelving carts are empty, and the wheels don’t squeak. Librarians are thankful when the shelves are empty, because it means people are reading our books and watching our movies.

Librarians are thankful when it’s cold outside, but warm inside. Librarians are thankful that people have the library to stay warm in. Librarians are thankful that the roof isn’t leaking anymore.

Librarians are thankful for the smell of books. Librarians are thankful for book renewals, because librarians are probably more scatterbrained than you. And because sometimes librarians want to savor a book just a little longer. Librarians are thankful for the invention of the printing press.

Librarians are thankful for our families, our pumpkin pies, our turkeys, and our mashed potatoes. Librarians are especially thankful for our gravy, because sometimes the turkey is a little dry. Librarians are thankful for our friends and our co-workers. Librarians are thankful that the people around us have a sense of humor. Librarians are thankful when our mistakes are forgiven.

Librarians are thankful for our youngest patrons, and the inquiring minds of children. Librarians are thankful for the inquiring minds of adults, too. Librarians are thankful for all the inquiring minds that come into our library. Librarians are thankful to be able to answer the questions in those inquiring minds, like what the climate is like in Tasmania and where is Elvis, really?

Librarians are thankful to all of our wonderful patrons. Thank you for making our jobs something to be thankful for.

(Rachel Rawn is director of the Havre-Hill County Library.)
