Planning on taking a vacation any time soon? Well, your trip could not be any more dysfunctional than “The Vacationers” by Emma Straub.

It is a story about a family, from New York and Florida, who head to an island off the coast of Spain for a two week vacation. The Posts are a family that is working on becoming better individuals after making some very unforgivable choices in their lives.

You have a father who cheated on his wife, a very angry wife, a daughter who wants to lose her virginity before she heads off to college in the fall, a son who is in debt up to his eyeballs with an older girlfriend who no one likes, and a gay couple trying to adopt. What do you get when you put them in a house together in a foreign country for two weeks? ”The Vacationers.”

If you find your family dysfunctional and are at your wits end, then this book will make your life seem ordinary. If you are tired of an ordinary and uneventful life then read the book and you will be grateful for the ordinary. “The Vacationers” is funny and warm and it shows us the messy truth about family, friendship and love.
