Our View: Havre Trails starts off well

Havre Trails, a volunteer group of people who like to walk, and the city of Havre have come to an agreement that can lead to vast improvements to one local park and adjacent walking trails.

It can be a model for the way to handle the problem the city has of diminishing resources — working with volunteers to get some necessary services provided.

Havre Trials will be working to get a grant to improve the trails and buy picnic tables and benches placed in US Bank Park. They also want signs that can tell people of the birds that inhabit the area.

They hope more people will visit the park which offers a beautiful view of the city and the Bear Paw Mountains.

Havre Trails is associated with OPEN-GYM, a group that encourages healthy lifestyles. And nothing is more healthy than taking a relaxing walk.

The volunteers hope to expand their work to other trails in the city, too.

The city provides a good array of parks that are well maintained, but the city budget is limited, and there are no signs that extra money will be flowing into city coffers anytime soon.

So the volunteer work and the grant-soliciting efforts of Havre Trails will be most helpful.

Havre Trails was formed just recently and already they have made a great contribution to the community.

We wish them a long, successful life.
