Havre Public Schools salutes senior citizens

Havre High School student Marcee Murphy sang a solo, "6-foot-2," as the last performance at the Havre Public Schools Salute to Senior Citizens Sunday afternoon.

It had the refrain, "I don't care what you look like."

"I'm glad my wife said the same thing," joked Havre School Superintendent Andy Carlson, as he took the podium.

It was light-hearted touch to an afternoon program designed to thank senior citizens for their support of the school system over the years.

This is the 25th straight year that the district has put on such a thank-you program.

Seniors were greeted with a display of artwork from Havre students and a couple of model homes designed by students in construction technology classes. And once inside the cafeteria, they were treated to a meal prepared by the school system's food services staff.

They were waited on by student helpers and various staffers.

Then groups ranging from the flute group to the saxophone quartet to various vocal groups entertained the crowd.

Carlson told the crowd that programs such this are available only because they have paid taxes to support them.

One of the great things about being an educator, he said, is that he gets to see the students get better as the years go on.

Many of the performers are not seniors, meaning the crowd will enjoy them in future years, Carlson said.

"These kind of performances are only available because you support them," Carlson said.
