Skylights ink second transfer post prospect

Montana State University-Northern head women’s basketball coach Chris Mouat continues to make post players a priority in his 2015 recruiting class.

Last week, Mouat announced the signing of Sierra Richards to join the Skylight program this fall. Richards is a 6-0 post player from Lower Columbia Community College.

“Sierra is a major addition for us,” Mouat said. “She brings an excellent back to the basket game and has great savvy around the rim. She played extremely well on her visit here and immediately fit in with our players. She has a great future as a Skylight.”

Richards is a 2013 graduate of Kelso High School (Wash.), where she was a two-sport standout. She was a first team all-league selection in basketball, and named first team all-league and Player of the Year honors in softball.

At Lower Columbia, Richards also participates in both softball and basketball. This season, she was a first team All-West Region pick as well as an All-Academic selection. She helped the Red Devils to a 25-9 overall record and West Region title. They placed seventh in the NWAACC Championships. Richards was selected to play in the NWAACC All-Star game, where she scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

This season, she averaged 14.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. She shot 60 percent from the field, and averaged nearly 4 offensive rebounds per game. She had a season-high 28 points and four times recorded 14 rebounds in a game.

“Sierra had a great year at LCCC,” Mouat said. “She has been very well coached and brings a lot to the table that will help our program. She can score from a lot of places on the floor, and does an excellent job on the offensive boards. She is strong, runs the floor well, and plays much bigger than she is.”

Sierra is the daughter of Larry and Julie Richards. She plans on majoring in education at MSU-Northern.
