District 9C track gold on the line Wednesday

North Star out to defend 9C track and field titles in Havre

With outstanding weather for much of the spring, the 2015 track and field season is flying. And for the Hi-Line, that means the postseason is already here.

Wednesday morning, preps from all over the Hi-Line and beyond will descend upon the Havre Middle School Track for the annual District 9C track meet. The meet is the first of three straight weeks of postseason action, and is a springboard to next week’s Northern C Divisional meet in Great Falls.

But this 9C meet will be a little different in a number of ways. First, Chester/J-I joins the fray, coming over from the 10C, and that should make the team title races much more interesting. And secondly, there is a new qualifying system in place this year, meaning many of the individuals in Wednesday’s meet have already qualified for next week’s Northern C via their performances throughout the regular season.

Still, the 9C meet is always one of the most exciting meets of the season and Wednesday’s event will be no different.

On the boys side, North Star is the defending 9C champion, and while the Knights are strong once again, Chinook and C/J-I could be the teams to beat in Havre. The Beeters have had a strong season in the sprints and jumps, as well as the relays, while the Hawks have a top point getter in junior Justin May. Box Elder could also factor into the equation Wednesday due to a bevy of great distance runners.

North Star has also long dominated the girls 9C team title race, and the Knights are certainly a favorite again Wednesday — especially with senior Tylynn Rettig starring in multiple events. However, Chinook is another strong contender and the Beeters, led by sprinter Kailey Kleinjan, will push the Knights all the way.

The District 9C track meet will get underway Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Havre Middle School Track, with the top six athletes in each event advancing to the Northern C Divisional next Thursday in Great Falls. From there, the top six athletes in each event will advance to the Class C state meet May 22-23 in Laurel.
