Lights land two-sport standout

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team, and the MSU-N men's golf team just got better. And with just one high school recruit.

On Thursday, Northern head men's coach Shawn Huse, and Lights' golf coach Dave Boles announced that Missoula Hellgate standout Devin Bray has signed to play both sports at MSU-N.

Bray, a 5-9 guard is a Second-Team All-Conference performer this past season, scoring 7.7 points per game and dishing out 3.7 assists per game, which was fifth in Class AA.

In his three seasons as the Knights' point guard, he helped lead them to the 2013 Class AA state championship, as well as a runner-up finish in 2014 and a third-place trophy back in March.

“Devin is another special all-around guy that will fit in great with our group," Huse said. "He is a high-quality person from a great family, a great leader, an outstanding student, and a very talented athlete. With his engaging personality, he is someone teammates love to have on their team and to be around. With regards to basketball, he was the best true point guard in our state this year ... from what I saw. He has great vision, can handle the ball while absorbing contact, brings consistent positive energy to the floor, brings intelligence, and has a high-percentage quick-release shot. He deferred to some talented teammates a great deal in high school which probably overshadowed, at times, his ability to score. He is a naturally skilled guy whom many have doubted on occasion, yet he has proven them wrong time and time again.”

On the golf course, Bray finished ninth at the Class AA state meet as a senior, which earned him Class AA All-State honors. He was a three-year varsity player for Hellgate and had three Top 5 finishes to his credit.

Bray is also an Academic All-State selection in both basketball and golf and a member of National Honor Society.

“I think this is a great step in the right direction for our program," Boles noted. "He will be a wonderful asset for not only the golf program but also the university."

"I am excited about the opportunity Devin has to continue his career at Northern," added Hellgate basketball coach Jeff Hays "Devin is a true point guard that can lead/direct his team on offense and spearhead the defense. Devin has quickness and great ball skills that will make him a tough player to defend as he continues to work to get stronger for the collegiate level. Devin is a great teammate and will make the Lights' program better in any way possible."
