Bulhook Blossoms celebrate Garden Week

Press release

Originating in Montana, National Garden Week was first celebrated nationwide in 1923 when Alma Higgins and fellow gardeners in Butte persuaded President Harding to sign a proclamation dedication the first week in June.

The Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club has joined all garden clubs in promoting the love of gardening, floral design and civic and environmental responsibilities during this year's Garden Week, June 7-13.

Garden Clubs in Havre have had a rich tradition and history since 1922. The Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club reorganized in 2009 under the leadership of Toni Hagener and selected the name from a past garden club originating in 1942.

The name comes from the mountain east of town and the creek that meanders through the city. The club is affiliated with the State and National Federation of Garden Clubs. The state meeting is June 12-13 in Great Falls.

The club meets the fourth Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Doc Timmons Conference Room in the lower level of the Hill County Courthouse January through October.

The club's objectives are to have educational and informative monthly programs and promote projects to beautify or enhance civic and community projects. These projects include working with the TURF Committee and school children in connection with Arbor Day, planting and caring for the planter at the Havre-Hill County Library, grooming the Hill County Courthouse peonies, and their newest project: care and maintenance of the Aminta Wilson Memorial Iris Garden in the US Bank Park in Highland Park. Currently the irises are beginning to blossom and people are invited to view them.

Again during this summer season, the club will recognize local yards and gardeners twice a month and assist the Havre Art Association with their July Art in the Garden Show. The club will end the growing season with their annual entry in the Havre Festival Days Parade.

The May meeting featured Lorrie Hanson discussing container gardening and demonstrating planting at the library planter.

June will have guest speaker, Terry Turner, County Weed supervisor, and in July club members will travel to the Bear Paw Mountains to visit Michael Mary Hulett’s yard and garden. New members are always welcome.
