Havre Trails waits, looks forward to future

At the Havre Trails meeting Monday, the group looked forward to the future.

Later this month, members will find out whether or not they received the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Recreational Trails grant. They also spoke of looking into identifying possible hiking trail areas on the north side of the Milk River, especially near the rookery.

“We’re kind of in this weird spot right now,” said Lindsey Bennett, president of Havre Trails. She added that they are afraid of taking on any bigger projects until they find out if they will receive the grant.

The group also spoke about creating an informative walk series for a later month. Its members would like to invite experts on different topics to walk with them and speak about the various sights. For example, a bird watcher speaking of birds seen during a hike or someone adept in geology talking about land features they come across.

Contacting and working with the Bureau of Land Management was suggested.

A geocaching hike was also considered. It may be a two-part series, the first at the college so those participating may learn the game and find the caches on the campus and the second in the Bear Paw Mountains, where there are many caches.
