MSU-N golfers host Frontier tournament at Shelby course

For the first time in the program's young history, the Montana State University-Northern golf teams were the host of a Frontier Conference tournament. And while the Lights and Skylights didn't finish at the top of the team or individual standings, it was exciting none-the-less.

Northern head coach Dave Boles and the MSU-N golf teams were the host of this week's MSU-Northern Tournament, which was played Monday and Tuesday at the Marias Valley Golf Club in Shelby. The two-day, 54-hole tourney kicked off the fall portion of the Frontier Conference season for MSU-N, which will play one more tournament during the fall season.

On the men's side, the Lights finished sixth with a total team score of 1,125. Lewis-Clark State won the tournament with an 891, finishing a mere three strokes ahead of Rocky Mountain College.

Individually, a local product stole the show, but he plays for RMC. Former North Star athlete Jordy Donoven, a junior at RMC, won the tournament with a 2-under par total of 214. Donoven beat Montana Tech's Sean Benson by one stroke, and a final-round 70 was the difference.

The Lights were led by freshman Devin Bray, who finished 37th after shooting a 251.

The Skylights also finished sixth in the tournament, which was just 36 holes. Northern scored an 829, while RMC was first with a 640, nine strokes ahead of LC State.

Individually, Whitney Bahrns was the top scorer for Northern, finishing the tournament in 197 and in 23rd place. Diana Ball placed 25th overall and Ashley Hooper was 26th.

The Lights and Skylights will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule with the Carroll College Tournament next Monday and Tuesday in Helena.
