Northern hoops, wrestling on the horizon

The football season is only half over at Montana State University-Northern. And fall seemingly hasn’t even started yet, save the color of the trees.

But make no mistake, winter, or at least Northern’s winter sports, are right around the corner.

Both MSU-Northern basketball teams, and the Lights’ wrestling team have begun to prepare for the upcoming season — a season that will be here in no time.

The MSU-Northern women, which went to the Elite 8 at the NAIA national tournament last spring, are a mere week away from opening the 2015-16 season. The Skylights will begin the season with three home games in the Duck Inn Classic next week.

To start the season, Northern will face Concordia of Alberta next Wednesday night, The Kings University next Thursday night and Northwest Indian College next Friday, in a week that will also feature games played by UGF.

The Northern women will be busy at home early in the season, as the Skylights also host Mount Royal University Oct. 23 and Dickinson State University Nov. 7.

The MSU-Northern men also get going next week, albeit on the road. The Lights, under veteran head coach Shawn Huse, will open their season with three games next week in Red Deer, Alberta. Northern will take on Red Deer College next Thursday, Northern British Columbia next Friday and King’s University next Saturday. The Lights then have a few weeks off before making their home debut Halloween weekend. There, Northern will take on Warner-Pacific Oct. 30 and Portland Bible College Oct. 31, and they will stay home to host Dickinson State University Nov. 7.

The MSU-N wrestling team, under longtime head coach Tyson Thivierge, is also hard at work preparing for a big 2015-16 campaign, and fans will soon get a chance to see the Lights in action.

Northern doesn’t make its official season debut until the Trapper Open Oct. 31, and the Lights don’t have a home dual until Nov. 19 against Southern Oregon, so that’s why fans won’t want to miss the annual Alumni Dual and the annual Maroon/Gold scrimmage. The Alumni Dual will be held Oct. 11 and the Maroon/Gold Dual will take place Oct. 22, both in the Armory Gymnasium.

So, while there’s still plenty of volleyball and football excitement to go around at Northern, and hopefully, still plenty of great weather to come, the indoor sports are coming at MSU-N and they’re coming very fast.
