Black powder club holds Christmas turkey shoot

Press release

The Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club held its annual Christmas Turkey Shoot on Sunday, Oct. 11 at the Hill County Sports Shooting Range on River Road west of Havre. Sixteen shooters participated in the afternoon event with six matches all five shots each at various distances and positions.

Shooting conditions were very tough with a steady 25-35 mile per hour wind and gusts up to 50-plus miles per hour. Keeping targets on the backers and keeping the backers standing was a feat in itself and the scores for the day showed the difficulty.

The winners of the matches were:

25-yard Pistol: 1st Pete Huseby, Havre, 39; 2nd Randy Owens, Havre, 31x; 3rd Jim Griggs, Havre, 30.

25-yard Offhand: 1st Cliff Plum, Havre, 35; 2nd Andy Owens, Havre,  34; 3rd Brad Bender, Havre, 34.

50-yard Offhand: 1st Dick Hanson, Havre, 43; 2nd Pete Huseby, Havre, 40; 3rd Andy Owens, Havre, 38.

50-yard Cross Sticks: 1st Andy Owens, Havre, 45; 2nd Jim Griggs, Havre, 45; 3rd Randy Owens, Havre, 44.

50-yard Curley Wolf Team Match (teams were drawn with one member shooting three shots offhand and the second member shooting three shots cross sticks): 1st Hondo Owens and Kendall Griggs, Havre, 27; 2nd Cliff Plum and Jim Griggs, Havre, 24; 3rd Alan Dees and Dick Hanson, Havre, 22.

50-yard Offhand Cartridge: 1st Dick Hanson, Havre, 45; 2nd Pete Huseby, Havre, 45; 3rd Kendall Griggs, Havre, 44x.

In keeping with the holiday spirit contestants could win only one turkey for the day. Sixteen places were paid out giving every shooter a turkey this year. Junior shooters were given a Pizza Hut personal pan pizza certificate.
