Obituary - Ann (Beck) Murphy

Ann Murphy was born Oct. 26, 1923, and died  Sept. 8, 2015.

Ann passed away peacefully at her home in Rancho Murieta, California, with her son, Doug Murphy, in attendance. Her sons John, Mark and Bill were also able to spend time with her during her final days.

Ann was born on Oct. 26, 1923, to John and Opal Beck in Wenatchee, Washington, and was the oldest daughter of seven children who were raised on a wheat farm outside Kremlin near Havre, Montana. As soon as she was old enough she joined the Navy Waves during World War II, serving her country in Washington, D.C. After the war Ann attended the University of Montana where she met her husband of 52 years, Glenn Murphy. Ann returned to the University of Montana during the summer of 1958 with four sons in tow to complete her teaching credential. Ann taught school in Washington, Montana, Ohio and California, last working as a substitute teacher in Valley Springs, California, in 1988. She was extremely social never missing an opportunity to travel, play bridge, spend a day on the golf course or go on local excursions with one of the many groups in which she was very active. Glenn and Ann were long-time members of the Shriners. Ann was a member of the Red Hats and helped found and lead the seniors Friendship Club in Rancho Murieta. She especially loved to have the grandchildren over to go swimming. Always independent to the very end, she had just returned from a vacation to visit her sisters in Montana. Ann is remembered as an optimistic person who was unfailingly supportive of her family.

In addition to her four sons, Ann is survived by her sisters Vinnie Bendix and June Donovan; her six grandchildren, Jennifer Murphy, Brook Fuller, Tara Torrant, Allison Murphy, Ellen Murphy and Jane Murphy; and six great-grandchildren, Alec Murphy-Abrams, Katelyn Fuller, Frank Fuller III, Emma-Lee Fuller, Landon Torrant and Beck Torrant.

A private memorial will be held in her honor. In lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to the Voluntary Services VA Sacramento Medical Center, 10535 Hospital Way, Mather, CA 95655.
