Thanksgiving

Weather

The worst of the snow has fallen on the area, but be prepared for some rough travel conditions today and Thursday.

There will be high winds and lower temperatures come Thursday morning. Temperatures will hover around 4 degrees. Winds will cause visibility problems on area highways.

The farther south you travel, the worst the snow will be.

Open or Closed

Most non-emergency public services will be closed Thanksgiving Day.

Some will return to work on Friday. Here is the schedule:

• Havre city offices and Hill County offices will be open Friday.

• North Central Montana Transit buses will not be running.

Rocky Boy tribal offices will be closed.

• North Central Senior Center will be open Friday.

• Havre-Hill County Library will be open Friday and Saturday.

• Banks will be open Friday.

• The Havre Daily News will be closed Thursday, but will publish Friday.

Weekend Events

Thanksgiving Dinner

People are invited to the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday at St. Jude Parish Center.

There is no charge, and everyone is invited.

Volunteers do all the work, and an anonymous donor pays for the food.

Chinook festivities

Chinook will host the Festival of Trees, the Christmas Stroll and the Parade of Lights Friday. Trees will be on display 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Santa Claus will be in the lobby of Wells Fargo Bank 2 to 4 p.m., and horse-drawn carriages will offer free rides throughout downtown Chinook.

Santa Run

People attired in Santa outfits and elf uniforms will run through downtown Havre at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with registration at 4 p.m. at Norman’s Ranch and Sportswear. Prizes will be awarded to winners.

Lighting of the Christmas tree

At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, people will gather at Town Square for the annual lighting of the community Christmas tree.

Santa will arrive to greet the children, and Havre High School choral groups will perform. Treats will be given to young people and gift certificates will be awarded.

Festival of Trees

The annual fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line will begin at 7 p.m. For the first time, it will be held at the club itself, which recently expanded its facilities and includes a multipurpose room.

Fifteen Christmas trees decorated by local businesses, families and nonprofits will be auctioned off, along with a host of items ready for the silent and open auctions.
