Splash: Ponies shine at home

Havre High swim teams do well in season-opening Havre Invite

It was only the beginning, but the first meet of the 2015-16 season sure meant a lot to the Havre High boys and girls swimming teams.

The Blue Ponies made a splash in their season debut as they took on CMR and Great Falls High in the annual Havre Invitational Saturday afternoon the Havre Community Pool. In the triangular meet, the Blue Pony girls finished an outstanding second with 156 points, while the HHS boys finished third with 123 points. CMR dominated the meet on both sides.

But, no matter the team scores, Havre High head coach Jill Cammon was more than excited with the way her teams got their season started.

“Our swimmers did a great job,” Cammon said. “I was really impressed with a lot of the swims. A lot of our swimmers are starting off the year faster than they ended last year, so that was great to see. Our younger kids started off really strong too. A lot of our new swimmers were very competitive in their first meet, and they’re going to have a great year too. So it was a really good first meet for all of our swimmers.”

While Saturday’s meet was a good starting point for all of HHS’ swimmers, it was simply, a really good day for several Blue Ponies.

On the girls side, Aubri McCann, Amelia Miller, Lita Cammon and Jackie Martin were all big scorers for HHS. McCann won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.95, and she finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:36.57. The breaststroke was a big race for the Ponies, as well, because Alara Vogel finished fifth with a time of 1:34.96, and Ally Padgett was right behind her in sixth place.

Miller also won an individual race for the Ponies, as she captured the grueling 400 freestyle in 5:07.38, with teammate Hannah Lunak placing fifth with a time of 5:52.39. Miller also finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:49.99, while Padgett finished fifth in that race with a time of 3:07.90.

Lita Cammon turned in a pair of third-place finishes in elite race for the Ponies. She finished third in the 100 freestyle (1:08.14) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:19.56), while Lunak placed fourth in the backstroke with a time of 1:22.25. Martin was fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:33.56, while teammate Lacey Huseby finished sixth in the same event. Martin placed sixth in the 50 free.

The Havre girls, and also the boys, were strong in their first relays of the season, especially the 400 free. For the girls, the Havre A team, composed of Miller, Padgett, McCann and Cammon, placed second with a time of 4:35.24, while the boys A team, made up of Ethan Lines, Noah Gjesdal, Ammon Lines and Mason Sandstrom finished fourth with a time of 3:52.11.

In the other girls relays, Havre A was third in the 200 medley, and the Havre B team, made up of Huseby, Aria Pratt, Laura Vance and Jessica Otto, placed fourth overall. For the boys, the Havre A squad, made up of Ammon Lines, Shandon Oberquell, Clayton Twombly and Dakota Acor, placed third in the 200 medley, and the Ponies were even better in the 200 free. The A team, composed of Ethan Lines, Oberquell, Gjesdal and Sandstrom placed third and the B team, made up of John Klein, Trevor Williams, Aylan Pratt and Acor finished sixth.

It was also a strong start individually for the Pony boys. Sandstrom finished fourth in the 200 free with a time of 2:35.25 and fifth in the 100 free with a time of 1:08.15. Oberquell was Havre’s top finisher with a third-place showing in the 100 breaststroke. He touched the wall in 1:31.40, while Aylan Pratt finished sixth in the same race.

Ethan Lines finished fourth in the 200 IM for the Ponies, with a time of 2:58.48, while Ammon Lines was fifth in the lengthy 400 free with a time of 6:18.26.

“We had really good swims, Amelia Miller’s swim just gave me chills. Aubri McCann, Lita (Cammon), Alara Vogel, they are all starting off strong too,” coach Cammon said of Saturday’s performance. “It was also great to see our boys start off so strong. To have two relay teams place in one event, that was great. Our boys are started off really strong. So that’s all really encouraging, and it shows we’re going to have a great year.”

Havre’s season continues with a pair of meets this weekend in Great Falls.
