Blue Pony girls shine in the water

It may have been only the second week of the season, but the Havre High swim teams showed they are in good form — especially the Blue Pony girls.

Havre was in Great Falls this weekend for a pair of meets. And Friday, the HHS girls had one of their best showings in years. At the Great Falls PreRelay Meet Friday at the GFH Pool, the Pony girls swam to a second-place finish. HHS scored 276 points in a meet which featured champion CMR, as well as GFH, Whitefish, Hardin and Columbia Falls. The Havre boys were fifth in the meet with 124 points.

Individually, Friday’s meet was an impressive one for the Pony girls. Aubri McCann won the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:13.60. It was her second straight win in the event. Teammates Amelia Miller and Alara Vogel finished third and fourth, respectively in the race in which Havre just dominated. McCann would go on to finish seventh in the 100 freestyle.

The Ponies also got a big day from Amelia Miller, who won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:35.03. Another race the Ponies dominated was the 50 free. Hannah Lunak placed second with a time of 27.95, while Jackie Martin was third at 28.48 and Vogel was fifth at 29.39. Lunak also placed seventh in the 100 backstroke, while Martin was fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:18.19. Ally Padgett placed seventh in the same race.

Senior Lita Cammon was strong as well. She finished second in the 200 free, touching the wall in 2:15.77, while she finished fourth in the 100 free with a time of 1:00.74.

As expected, Havre was strong in the relays, too. The Ponies won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:51.89, while finishing second in the 400 free and third in the 200 medley.

The day wasn’t as successful for the Pony boys, but they still swam well.

Shandon Oberquell was Havre's top placer. He finished an outstanding third in the breaststroke with a time of 1:20.91.

Mason Sandstrom placed sixth in the breaststroke with a time of 1:25.48, and he finished seventh in the 200 free. Ammon Lines had a solid eighth-place finish in the 50 free, while the Ponies placed fifth in the 200 free relay and sixth in the 200 medley.

On Saturday, the Ponies were back in the pool in Great Falls for the annual Great Falls Relay Meet. And while HHS didn’t have any top six finishes, it was a fun event for both teams, and it gave the Ponies a chance to swim against almost the entire Class AA field.

Havre is now off for the holiday break. The Ponies will return to competition when they host the Class A Invitational Jan. 9 at the Havre Community Pool.
