Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup

Box Elder, HLP and C/J-I win big games

Another few days of exciting high school basketball went into this books this past weekend, as teams from across the Hi-Line battled it out in attempts to improve conference position with postseason tournaments right around the corner.

Things got started on Thursday, with the Chinook Sugarbeeters playing host to the Harlem Wildcats in a renewal of an old Class B rivalry. And the Beeters, who are now in the ranks of Class C, fell short of a season sweep, falling to the Wildcats at home 57-49.

Keahna Little led the way for the Wildcats with a game-high 21 points. Marcus Henry also contributed with 13. Isaac Bell put together a solid performance in a losing effort for Chinook with 23 points. Cord Schneider also pitched in with 19.

On Friday night, the top two teams in the District 9C were in action, starting with the Box Elder Bears, who traveled to Fort Benton and dismantled the Longhorns by the score of 79-28. Tristan Bernard was the top scorer for the Bears with 14 points. Brandon The Boy added 11 and Jerrod Four Colors pitched in with eight.

While the Bears were winning in Fort Benton, the Chester/J-I Hawks were in Big Sandy trying to keep pace with Box Elder for first place in the district. And Friday night, they did just that by trouncing the Pioneers 64-20 on their home floor.

The Hawks outscored Big Sandy 22-8 in the opening stanza and then scored 35 points in the second quarter and never looked back. Justin May had one of his best outings of the season, finishing with a game-high 26 points. Cory Richter also added 10 points for C/J-I, while Troy Harmon had nine.

In another showdown of 9C teams, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds continued their recent string of winning ways, earning a 90-34 home win over the Turner Tornadoes Friday night. Frank Runs Above continued his impressive season with a 19-point effort to lead the T-Birds. Thane Helgeson added 15 and Chance Main pitched in with 12. Eddie Harmon was the lone Tornado in double digits as he ended the game with 11 points. Tyler Humphreys also finished with nine points in the loss.

At the same time that 9C teams were battling it out against each other, another 9C club, the North Star Knights, took a break from conference play to host fellow Northern C member Geraldine/Highwood in a non-district contest. The Knights, who are putting together a solid season, earned a 52-33 victory after jumping out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter Devon Miller paced the Knights with 21 points. Shea Sizemore led a slew of other Knights, who scored in the win, with nine. Matthew Helmbrecht also managed seven.

Elsewhere, in Class B action, the Rocky Boy Stars paid a visit to Northern B rival Malta in a non-district bout and ended up getting beaten handily by the Mustangs 75-44. Malta scored 22 points in the first quarter and 20 in the second to build a 42-23 halftime advantage and cruised from there for a 31-point thrashing. Ben Iron Eyes did score 13 points in the win for the Stars. Kendall Windy Boy also had a solid game with 11.

In District 2B play Friday, Harlem was looking for its second consecutive win on the road against Glasgow. And heading into the fourth quarter, it looked like the Wildcats might get it. Harlem led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter and 29-21 at the half. But, a tough third quarter, in which Harlem managed only two points, allowed the Scotties to get back in the game. In the fourth quarter, Glasgow wrapped it up, outscoring Harlem 21-10 to clinch the victory. Henry had another stellar game for the Wildcats with 18, while Little also had 12.

On Saturday, after handily defeating Fort Benton, Box Elder played host to Big Sandy and did the exact same thing to the Pioneers, knocking them off easily by the score of 92-27. 11 different Box Elder players found their way into the score book in the win, but it was Shane Ketchum, who led them all with a team-high 14 points.

The Boy had 12 and Petey Azure had 10. The Pioneers may have gotten beaten soundly, but there was one bright spot on the night for them and that was the play of Laurence Alderdice, who led all scorers in the contest with a game-high 20.

Box Elder earned its sweep for the weekend to improve to 11-1 in the 9C standings and Saturday, on the road against North Star, C/J-I did the same, taking down the Knights 81-53.

North Star made a game of it for a while, trailing 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and 36-25 at the half. However, a 26-point outburst in the third quarter, put the game on ice for the Hawks, who cruised to the easy victory in the second half.

May went off for his second straight 26-point game, while Cory Richter had 17 of his own. Harmon also added 17 for the Hawks, who also got 11 from Javin Miles. Miller had another solid game for the Knights with 12 points. Helmbrecht added nine.

In other 9C action Saturday, Chinook bounced back from its loss Thursday to Harlem by knocking off Turner 70-27 to keep pace with the other top teams in the district.
