Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Chinook, Box Elder win big 9C showdowns

The first weekend in February marks the final push to the district tournaments in Hi-Line girls basketball. And, with last weekend's games in the books, there's just one week left in the regular season.

Last week started with Chinook trouncing the Harlem Wildcats in a non-conference game Thursday night in Chinook. The Sugarbeeters and Wildcats were once fierce District 2B rivals, but now in Class C, Chinook was still too strong for the Wildcats as they out-scored Harlem 45-17 in the first half of a 71-29 win.

Brooke Nicholson buried a whopping 30 points to lead the Beeters, who also got eight points from Taylor Neibauer. Harlem was led by Skylee Dirden's 10 points.

Things didn't get any better for the Wildcats Friday night as the rival Glasgow Scotties raced past the Wildcats, 63-40 in Glasgow. The Scotties led 33-19 at the break and used an 18-8 push in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Brooke LeValdo and Mari Ereaux combined for 24 points in the loss for Harlem.

Rocky Boy was also in Class B action Friday night, but the Morning Stars were up against the best team in the state in the Malta M-Ettes, and on their home floor, the M-Ettes won 68-27. Rocky Boy was paced by seven points each from Adrienne Gopher and Rosie Parker.

Back in the District 9C Friday night, the Chester/J-I Hawks took down Big Sandy 57-23 in Big Sandy. The Hawks broke the game open with a 20-3 second-quarter run.

Korrine Harmon led all scorers with 23 points for the Hawks, while Maddie Reichelt scored 10 for Big Sandy.

Meanwhile, in what was their last stern test before the district tourney, the Box Elder Bears blew out the Fort Benton Longhorns 76-37 Friday night in Box Elder. The powerful Bears led 17-6 after the first period and never looked back.

Alyssa LaMere led four Bears in double figures with 20 points. Tia Russell, Tyrah Gopher and Jude The Boy each scored 13, while Fort Benton got 14 points from Bailey Wilson and 10 by Alia Evans.

Friday night also saw North Star step out of conference play, but the Knights were upended at home against Geraldine-Highwood, 43-33. The Mountaineers outscored North Star 20-9 in the final quarter and that was the difference in the contest. Sheridan O'Neil and Graysen Spicher combined for 17 points in the loss.

However, back in the 9C Saturday night, the Knights rebounded against an old rival, the Chester/J-I Hawks. In a thrilling finish, the Knights beat the Hawks 41-40 in Rudyard. North Star was ahead 26-25 heading into the final quarter, and in a back-and-forth final 10 minutes, the Knights were able to hold the Hawks off.

Sheridan O'Neil led North Star by notching 11 points, while Peyton King added 10. Kendahl Knapton and Kristina Dahinden each scored 13 for C/J-I.

Box Elder also stayed perfect on the season by blasting Big Sandy 81-11 Saturday night in Box Elder. The Bears got off to a 34-6 start, and held Big Sandy scoreless for the entire second and third quarters.

Jude The Boy scored 25 points and Tyrah Gopher added 15 for the unbeaten Bears, while Callie DeMontiney scored four points for the Pioneers.

Saturday night also saw Chinook take care of Turner, 44-21 and Choteau edge Rocky Boy 43-37 in a District 1B game.
