HHS track teams run well

Both Havre High track teams are young and both would receive an eye-opening experience at the Gallatin Valley Invitational in Belgrade, according to head coach John Ita.

That’s because the level of competition was much more difficult in Belgrade this past Saturday, than what the Blue Ponies are used to. Yet, despite that, Ita’s young teams acquitted themselves well.

The Pony girls finished in sixth place at the meet with a total of 42 points. Laurel won the girls meet with 81 points, Livingston was second with 62 and Manhattan was third with 61.5.

On the boys side of things, HHS took eighth with 28 points. Manhattan won the meet with 115 points. Belgrade finished second with 90 and Dillon was third with 76.

“I was very pleased with our girls team, I thought that was the story coming out of Belgrade, it was the performance of our girls team,” Ita said. “The boys team just doesn’t have a lot right now. That’s just where we’re at, but both teams did well.”

A number of girls placed for Havre, but only one managed to place in multiple events and that was sophomore Logan Huebsch, who finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.98 and sixth in the triple jump with a jump of 31-02.

Ireland Coyne was another top performer for the Ponies as she finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.5. Naomi Terry finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 27.47, while Rachel David was sixth in the 400 after finishing the race in 1:04.12.

Freshman Sarah Faber impressed with a fourth-place showing in the high jump, on a jump of 4-08. Loni Waid was fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 8-0 and the 400 relay team finished fourth, followed by a second-place finish for the 1,600 relay team. The two relay teams finished with times of 53.12 and 4:31.12.

“We really had young girls have good performances,” Ita said. “Logan PR’d in the hurdles by almost a second. I think she kind of surprised herself there. Ireland Coyne also got second in the hurdles. Naomi ran well. Then, we put Sarah Faber in the high jump and she jumped a 4-08 on a bad day for weather and ended up getting getting four points. Loni Waid was another that did well in the pole vault. So yeah, there was a lot to be happy about.”

The Pony boys, who were without usual point scorers Ivar Aageson and Nik Keller due to injury, didn’t score as much as the girls team, but still had some good performances, none better than Nate Rismon, who placed in both the 200 and the 400.

Rismon posted a third-place finish in the 200 with a time of 23.11 and a third-place finish in the 400 with a time of 52.68. Havre did well in other running events as Luke Karnauskas was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:05.91 and Jacob LaBrie was fifth in the same event, finishing just behind his teammate with a time of 2:05.96.

Michael Loftus notched a fifth-place showing in the 200 with a time of 23.40. Both boys relay teams finished fourth. The Ponies posted a time of 45.26 in the 400 relay and a time of 3:44.29 in the 1,600.

“We had a couple of events that really showcased Havre,” Ita said. “The 200 had three Havre kids that finished well. Then in the 800 we had Luke Karnauskas and Jacob LaBrie. They both competed really hard. Seriously, when you watch two kids run the way they did and see the way they competed it almost makes your eyes tear up. Neither one of them was going to give in. It was fun to watch.

“There were a lot of positives from both teams,” He added. “But we still have a lot of things to work on, but I think both our teams, especially our girls are looking promising.”

Havre will be back in action Tuesday, when both teams will visit Malta for the Malta Invitational.
