Grant given to Girl Scout Camp Kiwanis project

Staff report

Northwest Farm Credit Services has awarded a Havre Girl Scout a $1,500 Northwest FCS Rural Community Grant for a Gold Award project to restore cabins at Camp Kiwanis in Beaver Creek Park.

"On behalf of Girl Scouts and Camp Kiwanis, I thank Northwest Farm Credit Services for awarding this Rural Community Grant," Havre Girl Scout Emily Simonson said in a press release. "Camp Kiwanis has been such a tremendous asset for our community. Thanks to this grant, which is supporting my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I can help ensure it continues to be a viable resource for local youth for generations to come."

With the funds, Simonson will renovate two cabins by installing new walls, mop boards and wall fans, as well as canvases and cable for the bunkbeds. Her work is the fucus of the project she chose to earn her Gold Award, Girl Scouts highest award.

During the first rural grant cycle of 2016, Northwest FCS awarded more than $99,000. Since the program's inception in 2007, the company has presented 527 rural grants totaling more than $1,047,000.

The next rural grant deadline is June 1. People who think their rural project may be eligible for a grant can go online to http://northwestfcs.com/Stewardship/Rural-Communities for more information and an application.
