Hearing: Man accused of trying to drive over officer

David Reevis appeared in District Court Friday, where his five-year sentence to the Montana Department of Corrections was reinstated, and testimony from his Browning parole officer revealed that Reevis allegedly tried to run over an officer.

A September 2013 sentence ruling gave Reevis 13 months with the Montana DOC and five years on parole for a fourth or subsequent charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol and criminal endangerment. That suspended sentence was revoked Friday.

Reevis admitted to multiple parole violations that happened between September and January. He failed to find employment, report to his probation and parole officer, comply with conduct laws, abstain from alcohol, pay supervision fees and pay court fines or fees.

Glacier County Parole and Probation Officer Wendy Calvi, appearing through Judicial Video Network, said Reevis is a man caught between alcohol addiction and the desire for a fresh start. Calvi said Reevis wanted to get treatment, get out of Browning and “start a new life.”

But, Calvi said, “he was out not even a week and he was out drinking.”

Hill County Attorney Gina Dahl asked Calvi about a pursuit incident Reevis was allegedly part of Jan. 23.

Calvi said there were “numerous charges on that one.”

She said, while shuffling through a stack of paperwork in front of her, that Reevis racked up 14 criminal violations and 11 traffic violations. The Hill County charging document shows 15 total violations for that incident.

“He had tried to run over an officer with a truck,” Calvi said of the incident.

Calvi said the charges are still pending, and there is “debate” over whether the federal government should take that case over. Among the pending charges are attempted homicide, DUI and reckless driving.

Before restoring the five-year sentence, District Judge Daniel Boucher told Reevis to stand and asked if he had anything to say.

Reevis said he was ashamed of himself. In the past, he’s blamed others for his drinking. He said he had been sincere in trying to get away from his life and that he appreciates everyone who tried to help him. He said he needs to be more responsible and move forward.
