Local Golf Report: Tournament season about to heat up

From Tee to Green...

Memorial Day Weekend has come and gone. Graduations are over, and the kiddos are about to be let out of school. Yes, summer is here and, even if the recent string of rain and cooler temperatures haven’t indicated it, it’s true.

With the dawning of another summer, that means golf courses around our area will be brimming with duffers for the next three months. I fully expect our three area courses, Prairie Farms, Beaver Creek and the Chinook Golf Club to be busy from now until school starts again in August, and it should be another exciting and, hopefully, hot summer on the course.

Of course, golf leagues have been underway for some time now, though they have been fighting plenty of rain and wet and soggy courses the last few weeks. Still, leagues around the area are managing to get their rounds in for the most part.

Last Tuesday at Prairie Farms, men’s league saw Northern Edge score 23.5 points to earn high-team honors. The squad was composed of Kyle Sheppard, Nate Baltrusch, Ricky Brown and Christian Oberquell. Sheppard and Buzz Pizzini shared low gross, each shooting rounds of 38, while Oberquell was low net with a 31.5.

Last Wednesday night saw my good buddies from Havre Ford take high team with a rousing 26 points. Dr. Kevin Harada, Dave Boles, Brett Gilman and Kerry Olson made up the team, which I’ll be joining now that tennis season is in the books. Jeff Jensen and Jordy Donovan shared low gross, each shooting stellar rounds of 2-under 34, while Mile Kellam was low net with a 30.5.

Last Thursday night in ladies league, Havre Heating & AC took high-team honors with 22 points. Kim Evans, Kim Purkett, Jill Reber and Cindy Knudson made up the winning team. Sarah Spangler shot a 41 for low gross, while Patti Nault was low net with a 31.

Of course, with the start of summer, the tournament season is also heating up, and it starts with this weekend’s Golfing for a Cure tournament put on by the Havre Women’s Golf Association. It’s a fun, fun tournament, for such a great cause, and I have enjoyed my time in helping the tournament out the last few years. Sadly, I must miss the tournament this weekend, but I’ll be back next summer to volunteer my time, because it’s an event that’s become very special to me.

In all, there are three tournaments set for Prairie Farms in June. June 18 is the annual Natalie Patrick Foundation Scramble, followed by the NALSF Scramble June 25. For information regarding either of these events, call the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.
