Hi-Line United squads head to Montana Gold Cup

While the majority of spring sports have already wrapped up their seasons, one sport that is still playing is soccer. However, both the U19 and U15, Hi-Line United Soccer teams will be wrapping up their seasons soon, as they get ready to take part in their respective state tournaments.

The state tournament, which is actually referred to as the Montana Gold Cup has different tournaments for teams of different sizes and skill levels, as well as separating the teams according to age group.

This year, the Montana State Cup is set for today through Sunday and will take place in Great Falls. And while the draw has yet to be set in stone, both Havre teams will compete against the same familiar foes in Miles City, Red Lodge, Sidney, Laurel, Lewistown, Livingston and Big Timber.

The Montana Cup will start out with group play, in which both teams will generally play three matches against the other teams in their group. Following group play, the teams are seeded and take part in the knockout phase of the tournament until a champion is crowned.

The roster of the U19 team, which is led by head coach John Harkins includes Zachary Barnes, James Berry, Emily Brurud, Benjamin Dolph, Alex Drew, Christina Fisk, Levi Huston, Clifford Lenhardt, Corey Lloyd, Sawyer Manuel, Dean Marion, Michelle Rainey, Trenton Smith, Olvia Snyder, Rowland Snyder, Kaylee Teasley, Juan Valadez, Natalie Verploegen and Mitchell Woods.

The U15 team, which is directed by head coach Jayson Burrington, includes a total of 16 players and features Sean Borrero, Michael Chagnon, Logan Cloninger, Max Olson, Rhoda Peterson, Troy Powell, Brianna Rainey, Heather Rolf, Justin Rolf, Isabella Snyder, Noah Teasley, Gabriel Triplett, Josiah Triplett, Miya Wilting and Sylvia Wilting.

“This season was an eye-opener in the beginning,” Burrington said. “But throughout, the season, the kids started to come together as a team and started working together. You could see see the kids grow over time. They became a family and there was a lot learned. Now, it’s time for state.”

The Montana State Cup will begin today and runs through Sunday’s championship round.
