Havre High cheer squad brings home awards

Havre High School cheerleaders returned home Monday night from a four-day cheer camp in Bozeman having won the sought-after Top Banana Award as well as other recognitions.

Cheerleading coach Kasey Wenger said the Havre High girls won the Top Banana Award the first and the last night of the camp, which took place July 8 to July 11.

"It stands for the most spirited - it's everything a cheerleader should be," she said.

The camp was put on by UCA, Universal Cheer Association, which puts on cheer camps all across the nation. Wenger said there were about nine teams from Montana at the camp and one from Idaho.

The Havre High cheer squad won a third-place trophy in a cheer competition called the Xtreme Routine, Wenger said.

Havre cheerleaders also won a Superior Trophy and a Gatorade cooler for getting blue ribbons on all their routines and cheers. Wenger said Amelia Beard and Airyanna Mcleod received the leadership Pin It awards and the team's two seniors, Laine Shettel and Mcleod, were invited to try out to become a member of the UCA staff.

Only four girls from the camp received these invites, she said.
