Local Golf Report: Golf league champions crowned

From Tee to Green...

It was certainly championship week last week at Prairie Farms Golf Course. From high school to league golf, the course crowned some great golf champions.

The action started last Thursday when the Havre Blue Ponies hosted their Havre Golf Invitational. It was so much fun to see high school golf back on the course, and it was especially exciting to see Blue Pony seniors Dustin Haas and Kane Gabrielsen shoot the best scores in a field which included the Class A defending state champion from Billings Central.

Overall, a lot of Pony players carded good rounds in the tournament, and, head coach Brett Gilman has two outstanding golf teams this season. So good luck to the Blue Ponies the rest of the fall.

Thursday was a busy day and night for Prairie Farms, as the women concluded their league season with the championship match in pretty awful conditions Thursday night. In the final match, the Prairie Farms team defeated Patrick Construction for the 2016 ladies league title. Prairie Farms consisted of Sarah Spangler, Kristi Peterson, Anna Toner and Amy Brown. Congrats ladies.

The men also wrapped up their season last week, with the men’s league, 18-hole finale played Sunday afternoon. In the final match, Michelob Light bested Wagner Plumbing 21.5 to 15.5. The winning team was composed of Scotty Adams, Tom Adams, Jim Kato and Chad Spangler, while Tommy Baker was also a part of the squad this season. Wagner Plumbing was made up of Dan Wagner, Russ Earl, Greg Baltrusch and Dan Kiederowski.

Wagner reached the final round by topping Vic’s Place in the semifinals last Tuesday, while Michelob Light beat BKD Law in the other semifinal.

Once again, it was a fun men’s league season, and congrats to the boys from Michelob Light for winning it all.

An interesting side note, I've been doing this column for quite a while now, and playing league golf in Havre for even longer than that, and this is the first time I can remember a husband-wife combo being league champs in the same year. No doubt, I'm sure it's happened before, but, for 2016, the top husband-wife golfing combo certainly belongs to Chad and Sarah Spangler.

Well done, guys.

While the men crowned a champion last Sunday, more titles will be won this Sunday at Prairie Farms. The annual Men’s Club Championship will be played Sunday. The tournament is an 18-hole stroke-play event, and it will be flighted by handicap. To sign up, visit or call the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.

A big congrats also goes out to Tyler Walters. Last week at Beaver Creek Golf Course, Walters recorded a double eagle, or albatross as they're affectionately known. Walters holed an 8-iron from 192 yards out on the Par-5 16th hole at BCGC. The shot was witnessed by John Tibbetts, John McLain, Bob Breum and Rick Ervin. I know that hole well. It must have been one hell of a shot!

I'd also like to take a moment to recognize the passing of Emil Kampf. Many of you may remember Emil from his days of walking BCGC. Emil loved to play golf, and I think he loved to collect our lost golf balls just as much. I also know two very good golfers, Emil's grandsons, Kyle and Jeff, who learned their very good swings from him. So, my heartfelt condolences go out to Emil's entire family.

Finally, for anyone wishing to have any final league results or anything else published in From Tee to Green, there will be just one column left this season. The column won’t be published next Tuesday as a I take an extended break from the golf, and Havre sports world, to travel to the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York. When I return, the final from Tee to Green for the year will be published in the Sept. 7 Havre Daily News, so anyone wishing to get anything in before the column ends for the year, email me at [email protected].
