Obituary - Lawrence A. "Larry" Schuschke

Lawrence A. "Larry" Schuschke, 90, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Aug. 27, 2016, in Havre, Montana.

Born on October 15, 1925, to Emil and Hertha (Wall) Schuschke in Lidgerwood, North Dakota,, Larry attended Lidgerwood schools. After high school, he entered the United States Navy in 1943 and served in the South Pacific during World War II.

Upon completing his military service, Larry attended Normal and Industrial College in Ellendale, North Dakota,, where he studied education. He taught school in North Dakota at Donnybrook and Ellendale, North Dakota, before moving to Montana in 1964. He taught industrial arts at Havre Junior High School until his retirement in 1984. During his summers, Larry worked for the farm programs of the Department of Agriculture in Hill County for many years.

Larry married Ethel Wilson of Donnybrook in 1951 in Kenmare, North Dakota. Together they raised three sons. Larry and Ethel would have celebrated their 65th anniversary in October.

Larry greatly enjoyed being a teacher. He was dedicated to his work with students and was always willing to spend the extra time needed to help them be successful. He loved seeing former students in later years and catching up on the news of their lives as well as recalling their classroom experiences. He is fondly remembered as a favorite teacher by many members of the Havre community.

Through his work with county farms, Larry came to know almost every farmer and every backroad in Hill County. A colorful and popular figure among the farm community, he was fondly rumored to have total recall of the acreage of every wheat field and the mileage of every gravel road in the county, as well as remarkable sense of knowing exactly how to plan his work visits to coincide with a farm's home-cooking and baking schedules.

Larry avidly enjoyed the outdoors. Whether it was elk hunting in the Missouri River Breaks, fishing a favorite "secret" lake or stream, or camping with life-long friends in his beloved Bear Paw Mountains, Larry was always at ease and at his best in the great outdoors.

Larry is survived by his wife Ethel; sons Garth (Barbara Gallagher) Schuschke of Kalispell, Jay Schuschke and Paul Schuschke, both of Havre; grandchildren Lindy (Ryan McCarter) Vogt of Phoenix, Arizona, Anne Schuschke of Kalispell, MT, and Sam Schuschke of Grass Valley, CA; great grandchildren Adia and Landon Vogt of Phoenix; his brothers Arthur (Dorothy) Schuschke of Fertile, Minnesota, and Dennis (Helga) Schuschke of Fargo, North Dakota; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Fern Lewis of Jackson, Missouri.

Services will be held Wednesday, Aug.31, at 2 p.m. at Van Orsdel United Methodist Church. Memorials in Larry's honor may be made to the church, which will be used for new draperies for the stage.
