Chinook wins a close one, CJI falls in a wild one

hings can change a lot in one week of high school football. Last weekend, the North Star Knights lost a tough game to Sunburst. Yet, this past weekend, it was the Knights who were on the winning side of things.

North Star, which traveled to Box Elder Saturday to take on the Bears in a battle of teams from the Six-Man North Division, dominated the game from start to finish on its way to a 53-16 win. Dylan Miller ran for three scores and added another touchdown on an interception he returned 25 yards.

Devon Miller also had a big day, catching two touchdown passes, while Keevan Borlaug matched his effort, with two touchdown receptions of his own. Cade Chvilicek finished with four touchdown passes in the win. Jerel Anderson and Pete Azure Jr. each tossed touchdowns in the loss for the Bears, Seth Duran also had a 35-yard touchdown catch.

The Knights (2-2) will pay a visit to Augusta this Saturday, while Box Elder (0-3) will host Geraldine/Highwood.

Great Falls Central 82, CJI 74

There were plenty of exciting games around the Hi-Line this past weekend, but maybe none were more exciting than the contest between Chester-Joplin-Inverness and Great Falls Central in a battle of Northern C rivals.

Eight-Man football is generally pretty exciting, but when it was all said and done in Chester last Friday, the two teams put up 156 points in an 82-74 win for Great Falls Central. Cory Richter was off the charts for CJI, throwing for 344 yards and six touchdowns, while also rushing for 137 yards and four touchdowns.

“Cory had a great game offensively,” CJI head coach Jim Vinson told the Great Falls Tribune. “He had targets in Brett Henke and Clark Diemert, but we just didn’t make the defensive stops that we needed.”

Clark Diemert hauled in three touchdown passes for the Hawks, while Brett Henke added two. CJI, which is 1-3, will take on Simms on the road Friday.

Things didn’t look good for Chinook early on, as the Longhorns scored 22 unanswered points in the first quarter, but the Beeters rallied for 24 in the second. Entering the fourth quarter, Chinook led 32-28, but a Niederegger touchdown run, his fifth of the night, gave the Beeters a 10-point lead. From there, Chinook hung on for the win.
