Eight Ponies advance to State A golf

Havre High girls second, Pony boys third at Central A Divisional

There’s a lot of ups and downs in the game of golf, especially in rough weather conditions, and under the pressure of postseason play.

And the Havre High golf teams experienced all of that at the 2016 Central A Divisional Tournament, which was played Saturday at East Glacier Golf Course near Browning.

The Blue Pony girls finished second as a team at the tournament, which qualified them for this week’s Class A state tourney. However, things didn’t go as planned for the HHS boys. Havre came into Saturday as the defending Central A champions, but managed just a third-place finish, which meant the Ponies didn’t make the state field as a team.

Still, Havre High head coach Brett Gilman will be taking eight golfers to Hamilton for the state meet, including his entire girls team for the second straight season.

The Pony girls shot a 451, finishing behind only champion Lewistown. Individually, Havre also got All-Conference scores from all five of its players, including an outstanding 105 from Regan Lammers, who placed fourth. Sophomore Teagan Fee was next with a 112 (7th place), while Grace Litzinger shot 113 (9th place), Kinzee Peterson scored a 122 (14th place) and Mackenzie Tilleman shot 122 (14th place).

On the boys side, Havre was disappointed to not get all five of its golfers to state, but, the Ponies still placed three individuals in the All-Conference category, led by senior Dustin Haas, who shot 89 for second place.

Kane Gabrielsen finished fifth with a 93, while Aden Passon also advanced with a 96, good enough for 8th place. Seniors Gavin Mosbrucker and Kyle Kirkpatrick rounded out the scoring for the Ponies, shooting 111 and 120, respectively. As a team, Havre shot 389, finishing behind Livingston and Belgrade in the team title race.

The Ponies will now turn their attention to the Hamilton Country Club, where the Class A state tournament will be held Friday-Saturday.
