For the Havre High volleyball team, the objective against Livingston and Belgrade was to win one match. A sweep would be great, but a split was required.

And over the course of two days, inside the HHS gymnasium, Havre hosted both teams, knocking off Livingston in come-from-behind fashion Friday, then losing to Belgrade the second. Havre beat Livingston by the scores of 26-24, 17-25, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-11. Havre then turned around and fell to Belgrade in straight sets by the scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-8.

“I was glad that we were able to come away with one win,” HHS head coach Tamecia Jarvis said. “We fought hard and our effort was good, but we were still inconsistent at times and that’s something that we will continue to work on this week.”

The Blue Ponies hosted Livingston Friday afternoon, and after the Rangers knocked off HHS earlier in the year, Havre out looking for revenge. Yet, after winning the first game 26-24, but losing sets two and three by the scores of 25-17 and 25-19, the outlook seemed bleak.

Yet, the Ponies responded with a gutsy 25-21 win in the fourth set and wrapped up the win in the deciding game, thanks to a 15-11 win that gave HHS its second conference win of the season.

“We got down, but we battled back,” Jarvis said. “The girls fought back hard and that’s what you are supposed to do, so that was good to see.”

Senior Jacey McDonald had a big outing for the Ponies, finishing with eight kills and three aces, both team highs. Naomi Terry pitched in with 10 assists, while Paige Nelson had 19 digs. Claire Worm also contributed with eight kills of her own.

However, against Belgrade, one of the most physically gifted teams in Class A, Havre could only hang around for so long before the Panthers imposed their will in a three-game sweep.

“We just weren’t able to get much of a block,” Jarvis said. “They are a good team and they have some good hitters, but we are just too inconsistent right now. I just don’t have a lot of players that I can count on consistently at this point.”

Bailey Christenson notched 12 kills in the win for Belgrade, which finished with a total of 42 compared to just 14 for Havre. Sydney Lambeth also had 12 kills for Belgrade, while she also contributed with 1.5 blocks. McDonald led Havre with six kills, two aces and one block. Terry contributed with seven assists, Sam Oliver had nine digs and Alex Donaldson had a block.

The Ponies are now 6-10 on the season and will be back in action Thursday and Friday night, with consecutive home games against Browning and Lewistown, respectively, to end the season.
